This challenge was brought about by a joke of a thread pertaining to shooting groups. What I propose is that you sit/lay prone shooting in one of the three AFFTA classes; Hunter, Open or WFTF. Shoot two or more ten shot groups from your chosen position then post them here.

On this linked page: http://www.aafta.org/ you will find the rules, classes and positions/equipment allowed for each class. I will allow attached bipods to be use,  I will also ask that you keep it to .22 and close to 20fpe just to keep things fair for everyone who participate.

Today I shot five, ten shot groups at 25yd using the WFTF seated position, an custom Air Arms S500 shooting AA 8.4gr pellets at 770fps with equipment allowed for the class.

These were shot top left and right, then bottom left and right, finishing with the center group:

Thanks for checking it out and I hope you will join me in the challenge.  John

I don’t know much about field target rules I’m assuming no bipod for prone shooting. What are the rules for me to shoot laying down?

You can use a bipod, but it’s not supposed to be attached. Of course I  could care less if it is. If you have an attached bipod it’s cool with me. Lets see them groups!

Thanks Joe. It was an interesting exercise in maintaining consistency while being in complete control of the gun vs shooting from a bench. That fourth target really got to me as seven of three shots are in what look to be a three shot group, two other in the top right and the loner to the left. Once I can get them all to look similar to the middle of the fourth group I’ll stretch it out to fifty.

I  hope you will join in. If sitting on the ground isn’t your cup of tea shooting from a bucket with a bipod is what those in Hunter class do so give it a shot, even with the 300.

Nice groups John. Been shooting my FX 200 on medium power with the 13 gr JSB’s to stay under 20 ft lbs. Been using the sitting position. My distance is 30 yards and I’ve been shooting 5 shot grops. mostly around .850 CTC. Lots of practice to do. I’m hoping the RAW with the knee riser will help!! Some day I’ll figure out pictures…

Well, here are three of mine shot from a seated position off sticks-first group is 9 shots. Second and third are 10 shots. I show the backer above because the paper tore and didn’t show the shots too well. .22 Marauder Gen 1, Factory barrel, tuned down to around 20 FPE.

Good timing on this thread as I will be shooting a FT match next weekend and better get practicing!

Here are two 10 shot groups at 25 yards.  Group 1 my breathing and pulse screwed me up as I walked out side, moved my 30+ pound portable target to 25 yards, put up a new target, then came back in the house and sat down and just started shooting.  I thought I could time the sway over the center enough to cover it, but nope, bad breathing and strong pulse and guessing the shot timing is right there to see.  You can see the effect the hunter class gets with a stick as a firm front rest  – little vertical difference but a lot of horizontal.  I gave up on group 1 and waited for breathing and pulse to settle down and waited for the shot versus timing the swing on 2 and 3.

It’s wet out here in Ohio today, so this is butt on chair in living room, shorts, t-shirt, no shooting jacket, with the front of gun supported by unattached Y stick.  Yea I know, not a bucket on the ground with stick in mud but we had thunderstorms last night and AM so I didn’t feel like cleaning my bag up after grinding it into the mud to get comfortable for FT sitting nor did I want to lay in the mud for prone.

Gun is a Daystate CR-X shooting Air Arms 10.3s at 875 fps for about 17.5 fpe.  Those are .25″ red centers and the quadrants are 1/2″ x 1/2″ so about 1/2 rough groups for 2 and 3.   At that distance the gun shoots benched into one hole, so that 1/2 spread is all about me.

Great shooting John and sharroff. Looks like you two are ready to take it out to 50.

No worries about sitting in your recliner😎

Can the  setting position in the video  be  used in US field target matches . This is the way I have always  shot from a setting position  so I’m use to it  but not sure  if its okay to use in  a match. https://youtu.be/yWokcWXmcSk. Sorry for the long video but its the only  one I could find that does it like I do . He starts at  6:00 into the video .

From what I’ve seen the seated position in the video is the same or very similar to what most WFTF shooters use. I shoot Hunter which allows the use of sticks or an unattached bipod. For the definitive answer look here-
    http://www.aafta.org/
There are several classes which have different rules for equipment.

That sitting style can be used during a match. Here are some examples of other seated shots:
    WFTF(no sling, under 12fpe)

Looks like a fun post John. I’ll try to give her a try if weather permits before the weekend is over.
Great shooting. You guys might have set the bar too high for me 😉
Haven’t shot off bucket and sticks in months 😉

I changed my scope mounts yesterday and needed to get a good baseline.

    John,
A little competition is a good way to get me motivated. And your 25yd challenge is a good test. So here is mine from today:

    Date: 08/25/2016
Rifle: SAG QB58 (Weihrauch barrel, Boyd’s stock)
    Scope UTG/Leapers: 6-24×50 @24x
    Pellet AA 8.4gr, unsorted
    Distance: 25 yards
    Winds: about 3mph shifting

I sat on a mat with no other shooting aids. So legal for AAFTA/Open or WFTF , or even Hunter if I had used a 12x scope. It’s a 12fpe gun, and a 24x scope so I’ll call it WFTF.

After group #3, I clicked up and right a couple of clicks. The position of the dimes gives me a good indication of the group centers. These Leapers scopes don’t have very precise tracking. Especially for the last few clicks of fine adjustment. It can take a few shots before the clicks “settle in”. Groups #4 and #5 show that it might now need to come down a little.

Groups were good, though I need to be able to hit the zero more often.

    Hey John

Shot 4 of those 10 shot groups at 25 yds with the Thomas off my bucket seat and trigger stick with scope on 30 power, since that’s the way I’ll shoot in “Unlimited class”
Lordy, that’s so much harder than benched 😉 Thanks for the motivation to break out the bucket and sticks. Had one flyer that was all my fault on the bottom left group. Hard for this fat boy to hold still 😉

I took 3 pictures. Added the 1/4″ stickers on second picture for reference, and added the 7/16″ heart stickers on last pic for reference.

Again, thanks for the motivation. Now I need to work at it a little harder.

You’re doing just fine Jimmy. Those groups will tighten up in no time. The point of this excersize from the start was to see if I could consistently keep my groups inside a half inch outside to outside. Even I am not yet consistent enough to do so. I’ll keep working on it though and hope you and those reading/participating in this thread who shoot FT do as well.

On a side note considering you power level and pellet choice even a split should be enough at 25yd to drop a target.

This is with my prod. My prod can shoot better then this. The problem was with me. Not use to sitting down and trying to shoot. My fat body just isn’t made to shoot in this position.
