Results Texas State Piston Rifle Championship - RESULTS

Below is a cut & paste of the email sent to all the TX FT shooters. If you would like to attend please PM your email address to me.

All,

Back by popular demand we will be holding the 3rd Annual Texas State Piston Championship on Saturday November 17th (please note this is the 3rd Saturday and not our normal 2nd Saturday). Just like the past 2 years this is a spring piston (or gas ram piston) match only. No PCP rifles allowed on the range for this match. You can choose between the 3 AAFTA piston classes, Open/WFTF/Hunter, and follow the rules for your class of choice. 1st-3rd place awards will be given for the top 3 overall scores. The course will be set up to be more spring rifle friendly using bigger KZ then normally used. Since awards will be given the cost for this match is $15/guest or $10/PPAA members. As always lunch will be served. Because this is a special match I am sending out my announcement earlier than normal so you can put it on your calendar. Please start letting me know if you are coming, including PPAA members. The match is a month from tomorrow so get your spring rifle out and start practicing!

EDIT - This match will be held in Granbury, TX (Pecan Plantation). You can find our link on the AAFTA website listed as PPAA

Thanks.

Nope. No convicts here or exconvicts I know of. Right now we have 18 people signed up but it's still early and should break 20. I started this match a couple years ago to give back to the piston shooters. So many matches the piston shooters were lumped into PCP classes because there wasn't enough piston shooters in any given piston class to make a class of their own. Of course in situations like this the PCP guys got the glory and the piston guys not so much. The piston shooters were (and still are and growing) a dedicated group and never missed a match. Therefore I decided to have a piston only match (no PCP rifles allowed on the range) to give back to a dedicated group of shooters. We hold this match in November after nationals. The idea is a competitive but laid back match where the PCP crew will dust off their springer and come out and shoot with the springer crew. It's proven to be a lot of fun and I get people asking me thru out the year to keep it going. I set the course up more piston rifle friendly with some bigger kill zones and more reasonable distances as I don't have PCP's to contend with. The idea is for people to knock down a lot of targets but just hard enough to keep anyone from cleaning the course. This year the Troyer is set at 27, average KZ is 1.18", average distance is 30 yards.

Craig, I live in Pa. and unfortunately will not be able to make the drive to Texas....but what a great idea. I think I will steal your idea for our range next spring and see how it goes. Our club has lots of guys with spring guns that never come out to shoot against the PCP's. Springer only, I like it.

Good luck with your shoot.

Give it a try Brislee. We have a great crew of spring rifle shooters, that is growing, but have been spread out over all 3 classes. We consider it takes 3 shooters to make a class. What motivated me to start this was my own experience at my first state championship match here in TX. Several of us had been shooting Open Piston and several of us had been shooting WFTF Piston. When we got to the big 2 day match for the chance to be the state champion only 2 guys showed up for WFTF and me and another guy showed up for Open. So neither class was eligible for the award and tile as neither class had 3 shooters. So we worked all year long, paid the money for the match, and walked away with nothing. To make things worse the PCP class equivalents didn't have enough to make their classes so us piston guys got lumped into their class and the PCP guys walked away with the title & award and the Piston guys got nothing. So that was the motivation. Give a dedicated group of talented shooters a chance each year to win something and take an award home.

i experimented around with this match and suggest doing it like I do now. Hunter, Open, WFTF piston shooters going head to head using the AAFTA rules for their chosen class, Top overall scores win.

+1

Our club held a West Coast Piston Championship for a couple of years (2016 and 2017) and it was well received. But two big matches each year were becoming more work than I wanted to do, so we went back to our one AAFTA GP match, with PCP and Piston classes. Though this year, we combined all piston shooters into one class at out GP match, and it worked out well.

Your Piston Championship with a tailored course is a good way to go.

Here are the results from Saturday:

All,

Below are the results of the match on Saturday. We had a nice turnout and a fun morning of shooting piston rifles. I think everything was about as perfect as we could have hoped for except a crazy amount of wind. As I repainted the targets yesterday I figured out my problem and most everyone else’s problem. The wind was pushing our shots off to the right. There was one guy though that seemed to have figured it out and that was Paul Bracaglia with a 46/56. Paul whipped everyone. The shots he did miss were primarily in the standing & kneeling lanes. Great shooting Paul! Second place, for the 3rd year in a row with a 39/46, was Terry Vanpool. Third place, with a 37/56, was Jim Clarke. Except for Paul’s score the overall scores were down about 10 points from our past 2 piston championships and this match had the lowest Troyer at 27 (previous Troyer’s were 30.0 & 29.3). So I figured it was the wind. Thanks for all those that came out and we will try it again next year.

Great match you guys had, Craig, and a good match report as well.

It has always surprised me why more shooters don't shoot piston gun, especially in open class. It is challenging, yes, but also a lot of fun.

When Scott ran his piston shoot at Moro Bay, it was also well attended, everyone got along well, and we all had a great time. Just because you can shoot PCP doesn't mean you have to, and I am glad to see you guys are doing it again.

Job well done!
