Texan SS got a good one

Been after this boar hog for awhile. Shot him between Thanksgiving and Christmas but he took the hit and never went down. No blood and we had him on another trail camera about 5 minutes later. We really didn’t think he survived. About middle of February we started getting pics of a big boar on camera coming into a feeder set up for pigs only. After numerous sits and a few all-nighters, I was finally able to put him back on the ground permanently.

Airforce Texan SS.457, Hawk scope and 280 grain slugs.

Good hog with great dental-work. Congratulations!

Care to share what you learned about the shot that didn't anchor him a few months ago? Recover the slug(s)?

Will be taking the head to get euro done next week. Going to tell him to watch for the slugs. What I learned was shot placement is everything. I rushed my shot and tried to put the shot directly into the top of his head when he was facing me with head down. I heard it hit very solid but he took the hit without even missing a step on his way out. This time I placed the shot right where it needed to be. I did place a second round to the base of the skull and spine to make sur he would not get back up. I’m too dang fat to climb a tree or out run him. And I always hunt with a sidearm.

Nice! I just snagged one of these rifles. What distance did you shot? Where did you place the shot?

I have kept all my shot 50yds or less. I know the gun will shoot farther but I haven’t needed to.

I aim for the ear canal or just behind it. This one was shot between the eye and ear a little low.

Thanks man. I'm hoping to head out to my friends land near Junction in the next few months to test mine out on real game. I keep seeing hogs raiding cattle feeders at properties near mine in Burnet. I'm glad they're not destroying my fences, etc, but it would be fun to take one from my deck.
