Texan SS .308: Finally the gun I always wanted!

I like to share my my newest gun to my arsenal. I am very pleased with my new gun and wish to share my modifications and experience with this gun because it turned out perfect for me.

First, I always wanted a gun that was able to quietly shoot coyote at long distance in all seasons, specially winter. My experience with most regulators, I don't trust them in 20 degree weather.

So, therefore, I had set a goal of an unregulated gun, that can shoot like a regulated gun, but still be a bigbore. It seemed pretty impossible, but I gave it a try...

First, I found a 1.1 Liter bottle for $180. As soon as I got it, I noticed it did not fit in the gun. The treads were the same, but the carbon fiber made the bottle thicker, so I had to gently trim the gun to make it fit. Nerve-racking to cut, but it fit.

Second, was the wood stock. I always pictured it with a stock but only problem was that nobody makes them, and I was NOT going to even attempt that myself. Luckily, Doug Russel (Maddog Stocks) made exactly what I wanted. Only issue was the shoulders of my bottle were a little different shapped than the standard ones. So, I trimmed the stock down in that area. Then put the stock on and tightened it down hard. This I immediately noticed a very positive consequence to the stock not fitting perfect.

When I shot the gun before I put the stock on, I noticed cheek weld and pressure made a difference in the shot POI, but after the stock was put on, ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE!

Third, in order to get the extremely flat count I always wanted, I tuned the gun down from 200+fpe to 158fpe. Wow, I got more shots and more accuracy that I expected. I got 7-9 shots under a 20fps spread and only fill the gun to 170 bar! It made great used of my air supply. Plus, it is very pleasant to shoot.

I knew I liked the gun but was nervous about bring it to EBR. I did not think a 158 fpe (150fpe is the lower limit) bigbore would hold up to the 400-700fpe guns there. But it did! Even if I did not get credit for two of the targets, it still placed 3rd!

Hey James, yea .257 seem like a good caliber. Thermal would be great! Coyotes are popping up in mn now. When I was young I never ever seen one. Now, I see one or two per year and hear them often. I've noticed deer and rabbit populations are going down at the same time. Think there is a correlation there?

Nate

Hal, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

Scott, It was great meeting you too! That is a amazing piece of art you made there! It's one of a kind. Yea I'm really thinking of getting a .257. There is a guy who has a condor .257 with a tj barrel. I'm testing it on Saturday. Let you know what I think. Thz

Can you please give me more details on the tank such as brand and size.

"Do you need to do a special modification for the bigger tank or can I simply use a regular paintball tank? "

The tank needs to be metric 18x1.5 to fit the texan valve. The talon p valve has standard so normal paitball will work for that one.

And what's the biggest tank you can get away with?

There are 2l talks. One is 2x as fatter, other is 2x longer. Those might work too, but the 1.1 liter seems to be just right for the gun to me.

Hi David,

Thanks for replying to my post. Great video by the way. Question about the bigger tank. Do you need to do a special modification for the bigger tank

Dan

Hey Dan, Yes I had to trim just a little of the gun away to fit the CF bottle. I had the older Texan. I think to new ones are already like that to fit a stock cf bottle. The top rail needs trimmed for the 1.1 Liter and a hair off the bottom on the older ones. (The CF tanks are a hair thicker at the neck than the regular aluminum bottles.

I admit the at first the look doesn't kill me..but having condors to use very often the position of the neck is horrible in those guns with the bottle straight.. with the angle adapter.. the condor one.. the texan one is way too low .. with those rings I get perfect check rest .. I hate to use high rings..the adapter is from pcp tunes.. is the best place for aiforce accessories

I recently traded my 308 texan.. but kept the .257 texan for a custom built...I wanted to make the texan push these... but it will take me deeper in to the rabbit hole.. ring now I have other things to do..maybe for a future project.. at 175g..I think it was going to be a lot $$$ .. to do 990fps

Those are huge! The new texans that come with the cf bottle have a larger hammer and weight. Plus the valve has more air flow. You should be able to get those close to 990fps, I think. Just be for one or two shots although.

Man, you have no idea how thrilled I am to see you are on here! Your videos on YouTube literally were what made me decide on the same Airforce rifle! I already ordered the same tank as yours as well! I appreciate you taking the time to make these detailed reviews!!

Thanks! I really appreciate it! You will love it!

Davidsng, I know this is an old thread but I like your settup. I am currently working on my accuracy which was better before I dug into customizing. I know I'll find the sweet spot. I'm tuning AF 457 Texan carbine modded a bit, custom foreend, TT drop down, a 1.liter CF bottle and TX2 valve. Just got it together and had 16 unregulated, from 3400psi to 2000. It's my hunter got 2 bucks and big hog so far but excited because great air volume gives so much more. Anyway love your video
