Gearing up for my hunting trip next week, I'm going to share some of that time with a PCP in my hand. I haven't hunted with 30 cal yet, so I wanted to see what works and get an idea if penetration vs destruction with different off the shelf projectiles.
First, this is what the 60gr NSAs were doing to my 8" steel plate from 136 meters. I was kinda fascinated by the near perfect circles the hollow points left behind (let alone the scars to the paint!)..
I tested those, the 65 and 66 grain NSAs, and the newer 62gr Varmint Knockers (BHN-7) with my R5. They all grouped fantastic, sub-MOA/MOA at 100m, but never more than 1.2".
So then, I decide to shoot one of each side by side in a piece if wood to get a rough comparison. The 66gr and 62gr definitely stood out to me more than the others (I shot them from right to left in this order)..
I shot these from 25m. After I shot the 66gr, I had little small fragments of wood falling all around me from above. Almost like a splash from someone doing a cannonball in a swimming pool lol
I'm still not positive about one or another having a clear edge. The BCs of the 62 and 66gr were unbelievably high - so much so that I need to go back out and test them again to verify (0.172-0.176 just doesn't seem right, but that's what both my LR recorded and what the BC correction feature of Strelok gave me ).
