Testing some pellet I have not before. Why you have to do it.

DISCLAIMER -

1. the gun is a BSA R10 .177 shooting around 18.5 FPE for FT.

2. unless you have this gun, your experience will probably be totally different. Please try these pellets too.

3. I’ve think I’ve tried virtually every pellet and head size out there. If you’ve got some that I may have overlooked you would like to see me test, please feel free to send me a small sample of 10 or so and I’ll be sure to post the results and give you credit for sending them.

This is pretty straight forward. During the early stages of pellet testing last year, I discovered the gun much preferred a 4.50mm head compared to the same pellet in a 4.52mm head. Particularly the H&N Baracuda Match 10.65.

About a week ago I noticed H&N had a pellet I’ve not tried or at least had a test target with the results. They are the Baracuda FT “hand sorted quality”. While looking through my test target results I also couldn’t find one for the FTT 8.64 4.50mm head and I could have sworn I had tested them.

Anyway, I ordered a tin of each to shoot them against the laser-beam pellets my gun loves.

Here are the results

Target distance is 30 yards - zenith zero for my gun. Orange target dots are 1 1/2”.

shot from a bag front and rear

weather conditions were 85 degrees and dead calm

10 shots each

Baracuda Match 10.65 4.50mm head. (Currently using)

I wanted set a baseline to compare what I’m currently shooting. Quite honestly, after shooting this “test” group I almost didn’t bother to test the others.

But I had ‘em so I used ‘em.

So for the next group I thought I’d try the pellets with the name, Field Target Trophy in it. That’s what we all aspire to win, right? the Trophy! Well, not today with these pellets. Now again, let me say, your gun may shoot these babies lights out.

And finally the new pellets. Another pellet with “FT” in its name. H&N really focuses on FT as they offer several models with that destination in the name. So you gotta try them if you shoot FT, right? These even claim “hand sorted quality” who doesn’t want somebody else to do the dirty work? Count me in!

I’m impressed with these pellets. The group was slightly larger and had the one zinger at 2 o’clock but are the closest group to the Baracuda’s I’ve shot so far. My shootin buddy and I are going to do more testing tomorrow with his gun and I may take mine along and shoot a few more of these and just see.

I would encourage anyone shooting FT (or just for fun for that matter) who’s groups just aren’t where they want them, to try some of the other head sizes out there. IMO, the fact the barrel in my gun is hammer forged and may have a tighter choke lends itself to preferring a slightly smaller head size.

Good luck in your shooting and give some of these a try.

@ flintstone

I've tried weighing...

I've tried a couple of methods of sizing including the pellet gauge.....

I've tried rolling. Even built a purpose-made rolling table...

I've tried lubing with a number of fluids....

None of the above really gave measurable results which made me want to go to the next level and spend the time and additional trouble.

I don't believe there is any one thing or combination of things that will make the proverbial, "silk purse out of a sow's ear" in pellets. If I can't get the first 10 pellets to groups well, I move on to the next pellet. Code blue. I don't think you can make a pellet magically hit the 10 ring over and over by doctoring them. Might as well burn incense and play sounds of waves crashing on to rocks next to the tin.

Most importantly though, for my application, my kill zones are much larger than that of say, Extreme Benchrest. As you probably already know, HFT has it's own set of demons to overcome.

Fortunately for me, I've got a deadly gun/pellet combo. Unfortunately, I can't blame the gun and pellet if I miss.....

Have fun, shoot straight. Let me know if you find something that works for you. I'm always open to experimenting.

I kind of like your method/non-method after a fashion. I don't doubt that Tom Holland knows what he's talking about but for me at least his particular methods seem to be a bit extreme. I really can't see myself going to that much trouble. Having fun shooting and getting together with friends is more important to me than winning. Perhaps Tom feels the same in a somewhat different way. I've read many different stories here and elsewhere about radical differences in weight and head size even from the same tin. How much does it really matter in practical terms? If there is a simpler way to eliminate say 85% of problem pellets I would like to know what it is. Anyway, it takes skill to shoot the way you do and no amount of deadly gun/pellet combo's will make up for lack of it, problem pellets notwithstanding.

I also shoot the same R10 as you. I found that Crosman 10.5gr heavies shot great. Similiar to what you found in the the CPH pellets I was shooting had a head size of around 4.50. These were L lot CPH pellets. Unfourtunately I started burning thru my L lot pellets and ordered 4 more of the brown box CPH pellets. The ones I recieved were M lot. They don't shoot as well from my R10 and the head size seams to be around 4.54. I wish I could get JSB or AA heavies to shoot well from my R10. They shoot great at 30 yards but fall apart at 50 yards. They shoot quite a bit flatter than CPH or Baracuda Match at 50 yards and would be quite an advantage if they would just group well at farther ranges.
