Made a slab of 12 % Knox gelatin to compare penetration of NSA slugs to a crossbow bolt with a NAP expandable broadhead. On the left are .25 caliber NSA 36.2 gr slugs out of my Impact MKII at 900 FPS ( muzzle velocity, gel was at 60 yards.) Penetration 5 inches (compared to 12 for 34 gr MKII pellets.) In the center is the track left by a crossbow bolt ( 400 gr at 430 FPS) with a 2 inch expandable broadhead (passthrough.) On the right is an NSA 290 gr hollowpoint out of my Texan .45 at 815 FPS ( muzzle velocity - gel at 60 yards.)

Now I see why NH allows bear hunting with crossbows but not airguns!

Yeah, I’m sure the Texan would do the job and I wish NH would allow hunting large game with air guns. I was impressed with the expansion to 0.8 inches ( given the prevailing view that you need higher FPS than 815 FPS to achieve good expansion.) I was hoping for more penetration to ensure an exit wound and good blood trail. Last year I shot a 325 pounder with a crossbow which did not pass through and left no blood trail. Problematic, as I shot it at sunset and had to go find it by flashlight. Luckily it only went about 30 yards.
