The LGU is the only rifle for which I know the correct pellet from past experience. The other rifles will tighten up as I find the pellet the barrel likes. I have shot them offhand for a long time and as badly as I shoot that way ANY pellet is good enough so I never really "load tested" the rifles. Bench is so different from 3P......So many rifles, so little time. G

Hi to All,
Hope this thread is still kickin'. I'm new here on AG Nation but not to airguns, been shooting about 12 years or so. Originally with a Crosman pumper and then to a Gamo CFX, and now I have 8 or so Springers and PCP's (Plus a couple pistols!). I'm on Yellow and Gateway, but really just found this site. I love all the "challenges" and the great and active discussions. I've been busy reading and some great shooters here with some great advice and wisdom.

I am a bit slow so I have a question regarding this "dimes" challenge. I have seen some covering their groups with dimes and the first target I shot would be great if that were the point. At 25 yards with a springer, 1/2" groups are not all that hard to do though. So I'm guessing there is more to it. Is it that I must shoot all my groups inside the dime outline THAT IS PRINTED ON THE PAPER? If so then I would guess that cutting or touching the dime line is no good either because then my group would not be "covered" by the printed dime? I must keep them all INSIDE the dime line to complete the challenge, is this correct? Or is cutting the dime line OK? Or maybe I'm way off and it's just being able to use a dime to cover my group no matter where it lies (low accuracy but good precision?) But if it must be inside the printed dimes, then it's both accuracy AND precision... quite a bit tougher. Sorry to muddy things up, I'm a bit confused so would appreciate any info on the rules.

Right now shooting an LGU with JSB 7.87's and it's quite good if I really concentrate and do my part. What pellet are other LGU shooters using? Today the wind was light and swirling from the left and then the right... really testing me. I'll try again tonight if it dies down.

Thanks for any help, information or clarification.

You surmise correctly; you must shoot all ten dime-sized targets with 3 shots each, all 3 shots falling within the outer boundary of each target. As I understand it, you can have shots that bisect the targets' outer rings but just clipping them on the outside counts as a miss.

The original challenge was considerably tougher as the targets were just open, grey spots - nothing to center your sights on. The current challenge modified the targets as you see them now.

The original challenge is documented at the top of the thread. It was to shoot ten five shot groups, each on a dime. Any miss disqualified the target. It is not nearly as easy to do as one might surmise (with a spring rifle). Pass or fail, Go or no go. I subsequently changed the requirement because the challenge was largely ignored by the community. I suspect because it was just too difficult. Anyone with patience and a good rifle, properly set up, pellets properly fitted to the rifle, and a good calm day can probably shoot a original ten dimes target. The only people who have ever done it that I know about have posted their results in this thread, nod to Joe and a couple of others. The challenge was just too hard though. I changed the challenge and started this thread. The first post explains further.

Hi Joe,
Incredible FWB targets you put up. But I shoot an LGU and I saw that great looking LGU target you shot and was impressed to see that from a full powered springer! Wonder if you can help a brutha our? Is the gun modified or tuned? Mine is stock and I love it. Not sure why, as I have a ProSport as well but prefer to shoot the LGU. Honestly they're both great to shoot, but the shot cycle of the LGU just keeps me coming back and it's fine accuracy if I do my job. The trigger could be a touch better though.
Are you shooting straight off bags? Bag with your hand? Sticks? Can you tell me what pellets your shooting? I use 7.87's and they seem best, but I don't sort and occasionally one will get away. 8.4's seem OK, but the 7.87's give me the best results with lots of nice little holes and then a few wider groups. Do you sort by head size or weigh or inspect?

I'll try to attach one of my targets. It has some other holes in it... from the pins I used to stick it to a cut log. Lot's of sighters as I was having trouble with my bags and the POI was moving around due to inconsistent placement on the bag/rests. I don't use artillery but maybe I should. Started out a bit rough on the top then settled in to some degree. Great guns those LGU's but I do find them to be just as hold sensitive as any full powered springer, contrary to what I've read about them.

Thanks for any info,

I got my 34 .177 out today to break in my new shooting bench. The weather was in the low 50's with the wind gusting from 4 to 9 mph from my 3:00. I was really worked on my breathing and trigger technique, after years of pulling the trigger in my first joint it's really hard for me to move out to the middle of the pad. Plus I tried to cut the end of my trigger finger in my lathe two years ago and some feeling is gone. These aren't very impressive but I feel I have another good rifle, the monkey behind it is a different story. lol

Not the "official" ten dimes target.

I took a break at lunch and left the rifle on the bench, this was warming me and the rifle up.

Hey Dart... I too have many problems with my right hand and especially the trigger finger. What I did was change to my middle finger as the "puller". Took some time to get used to but now I am comfortable using either. Give it a try but know that it will take some time. What I like best about using the middle finger is that it changes the wrist position to a much more comfortable angle. Also try putting the right thumb alongside the right side of the wrist of the rifle instead of "over the top". Again it is all about the wrist angle........................Let me know if you agree and best of luck.
