Ten Dimes Challenge

A couple or three years ago I made up a target that I called the "Ten Dimes Challenge" as I was tired of hearing people talk about how their rifle would "shoot under a dime every shot." Some time after that one of the PCP guys on another forum took the target and changed it to the "Five Dimes Challenge" and said it was to be shot with PCPs at 50 yards. I haven't followed the "Five Dimes Challenge" and I've never seen anyone successfully do the "Ten Dimes Challenge" which is here:
http://www.oldspooks.com/agstuff/Targets/challenges/Ten-dimes-challenge.pdf
I've kind of always wished Joe would shoot it with his fine rifles because if anyone can do it with a springer it will likely be Joe.

Anyway, I tried it this afternoon and needless to say it got the best of me. I had 44 out of 55 hits (if you count the sighter bull) so 80 percent isn't that bad. I've decided to change the challenge because nobody ever tries to shoot it and I'd like it to be realistically achievable so here is the "Ten Dimes Challenge v. II":
http://www.oldspooks.com/agstuff/Targets/challenges/Ten-Dimes-v2.pdf

It is only 30 shots (ten 3 shot groups) at 25 yards, must be shot with a spring rifle (or gas piston) and has nickel and quarter circles on it as well as dime circles. I've also added a better aim point. One of the things that made the original so hard was the lack of a good central aiming point (that wasn't an oversight). This one should be a lot easier to complete.

First off, do you get points taken away for not reading (or remembering) the directions?

I shot 5 pellets per target. (Dooooh!)

I think I got 7 (or 8?) out of 10 inside the dime. And all were inside the quarter. Gun was the trusty RWS 34 and JSB 10.3 pellets.

I guess I made it too easy. :( Oh well! That is some exceptional shooting and an exceptional springer. Very impressive.

Thanks! Well I had ZERO wind while shooting. But the humidity was wicked. I wasn't sure how that would affect things. I literally had to peel my cheek from the rifle stock after each shot. And shooting 50-shots in one target was an interesting mental challenge. I'll definitely repeat this with 3 shots per bull and see how it goes :)

Thanks for sharing this target!

OK Spook. This challenge is emptying my pellet tins... :)

Here's my attempt at your version 1.0 target. Oh. So. Close... I think out of the 50 shots I missed two of them.

My next attempt at the 50 shots crashed and burned in the 1st couple of targets so I said forget it... and just moved it out to 50 yards for giggles.

This RWS with a UTG scope never fails to impress me :)

I only see two misses and I'm not sure about top left. That's the best anyone has ever done on that challenge to date! But watch out for Joe =)

That rifle is just awesome! Who would not want a Diana Model 34 that shoots like that? Funny thing is I read the other thread where you mentioned all the guns you had sold and the ONE GUN to rule them all. What a fine shooter that rifle has turned out to be. That original challenge is just a bit too hard to accomplish but it looks like you are going to get it if you stick with it. Really impressive, and it motivates me to get busy tailoring some H&N FTTs to my Model 36.

OK, here are my latest entries... My dimes version 1 was shot per instructions. While the v2 target was just for fun because I did not use a springer.

BUT... I think I have perfect targets for each!

Both were shot with FX Royale 400 and JSB 18s.

Notes:

90-shots between the 2 targets
Start 210 BAR
End 139 BAR
My rifle was shooting too hot through these two targets - i later turned back hammer spring 3/4 turn after shooting these. This brought next strings down to 880 - 900 fps.

The targets look perfect to me but the guys that shoot the original with a PCP have moved the challenge out to 50 yards and reduced the number of dimes to five. So in order to impress them you have to shoot five dimes at 50 yards. Five, five shot groups touching a dime at 50yards for PCPs. That's something that Bob set up on a different forum.

I'd like to see more from that Model 36 of yours. That rifle really, really, shoots well for a light hunter.
