Results Temecula 2019 Turkey Shoot results

We had a fine match yesterday, with several out of town visitors, including Robert Buchanon (of AOA ), Nick Nielson and his wife Jess.(airgun slugmakers), Jim Ziegler (TV comedy show director), Mike Bricker (Navy Sub captain), Roger Lovett (master bike builder and racer), Matt And Mary Kellerman (champion benchrest shooters), Matt Saenz (Seasoned Motorman), Jeff Carmello (speedway racer), Nick Smith (Brother-inlaw to John Smith).

We hd one of these LCS beasts appear at our Sunday Temecula 25 Meter shoot, courtesy of Robert Buchanon. It was a sensation. At 100 meters it was blasting clay pigeons wiping out an entire row like a Warthog on a gun run through the valley of death. There is no describing the grins and hoots and hollars heard in the background. Ripping off 18 shots in the blink of an eye plus the zipper ripping sound was the icing on the cake.

Matt Saenz had to visit the emergency room to have the grin removed so his mouth would close. I think he went home and told everyone he found a new girlfriend and her nickname is Zipper.

Nick and Jessica Nielson were a hit and then Nick did a real mean ugly thing. The wind was howling up through the canyon and required a two foot hold off to maybe hit the claybirds. He shot five in a row after hiding and holding back all day. Miserable skunk! Oh yes and it was with Matt Saenz's $6000. (so he says ) rifle that none of the rest of us can touch.

Mike Bricker was defeated horribly at the canyon shoot. 0 for 10 . Poor soul kicked his gun over the edge. I retrieved it and got 1 for 10 with it. My best performance of the day.

Matt Kellerman is such a consummate engineer of the shooting craft that it is a pleasure just to bask in his success.

Jim Ziegler is a real behind the scenes guy. He made off with a stash of superb early Remington bolt action .22's that LD had hidden. Bold as a cat burglar he opened the closet extracted those two jewels and off into his rig as slick as a cunning cat.

Now to the one most deserving of wrath is the guy who beat me. Jeff why would you outshoot me? That two in a row. How much $$ do you want. No I won't do that!

Awwww, c'mon Nick, you know I tied you 1 to 1. ;) And with my top of the line $600 .22 FX Streamline. Good for 25M BR, not so good for 100 meters across a canyon with 20mph winds. But Nick holding out and ripping off 5 in a row was a sight to behold - with Matt S's Dawson Custom. We all had to pick our jaws up off the ground before we all applauded. And of course Robert taking second place in the 25M BR (no one can beat Matt Kellerman, not even LD, so we don't even try anymore). He had a bad day and shot 737 (he almost NEVER shoots under 740). Matt puts a beat down on us non 25M specialists and 25M specialists alike every time he shoots at the club. Luckily his wife didn’t shoot this time else she’d have put the beat down on all of us also. Both Nick Nielsen and Robert Buchanan can SHOOT!!!

I'll tell you that .177 Safari that Robert had is one helluva gun. I shot it at 50 yards after the 25M BR, and compared the .177 NSA 15.5 grain slugs to the .177 JSB Beasts. NO COMPARISON, not even close. Not to sound braggadocios, but if I had been allowed that gun and slug combo in the EBR 50Y BR competition I'd have won going away. Its THAT GOOD.

And the .30 Safari - fugeddaboutit! Pellet on pellet at 50 yards with the 50.1 grain JSB, and also with a few NSA slugs that were close to 50 grains. And at 100 meters hitting 4 inch spinners in howling winds was almost too easy. Whatever Daystate did with the A.R.T team in developing this barrel, they did it RIGHT.

Robert let me borrow the gun for a while to test it out and report back. I'll definitely write a few posts here on AGN. It'll be a straight up report as always. I want to take it hunting and target shooting where I normally shoot in Descanso plus try various weight slugs at different speeds. My first impression is two thumbs up, but that's just shooting it on two separate occasions at LDs place in Temecula. We'll have to see how the ground squirrels in Descanso CA like this gun... And since its late November, that means N.U A H., since they won't let you get within 100 yards at this time of year.

Mike,

You are correct in that you did tie Nick S. in the Canyon shoot, but though Robert B. did really good in the 25M BR, he didn't take second place. Yes, he beat you guys down on the left end of the line that shot the first (and less windy) relay but he didn't beat the winner of the second relay, who used a gun with less than half the power of his and cost less cash than even your one. Perhaps that $600 gun of yours is wearing out ... as your score was way down compared to last month's?

Perhaps that $600 gun of yours is wearing out … as your score was way down compared to last month's?

Yeah, could be, you know how fast orings wear out. Or more than likely, it could have been me, since I did shoot on the "easy end". Anyway, good shooting to you and Robert, only a one point difference in very equitable conditions.

PS., look at Robert’s score. I don’t think 240 + 240 + 243 = 731? One of the 240's should have been a 248.

Rats then it was somebody else that shot the leaners on the ground from the previous relay. Getting eyes checked soon. My dreams are dashed.

Ha! ;) I think that was LD that shot the leaners on the ground with the holes in the middle, then claimed that it should count. Didn’t he also hit only one but claimed he hit two because Jim Z shot one of his clays? And we gave him a two just to stop the whining? I think the reality was that we tied LD on that one Nick. But its ok, as he says repeatedly almost every month, he’s there for the social aspect and scores don’t matter....

I really enjoyed this match. Great guys. Even though I was the greenhorn. Note. If Larry tells you to show up at 8 am it’s because the locals show up at 7 to get the best benches 😂. Mike and I had to shoot in the sun 😎. And sideways

I don’t understand this new math either. One of my cards was a 248. I must have not paid Larry enough money to us a calculator on my score. Or maybe it’s because I did not want to drink his tomato beer.

At least I won a chicken. 😆

Greenhorn? You can shoot Robert! Ahhh, someone mistook a 8 for a 0 I'm sure.

Its funny how all the time its said that the benches we shot from "are the best and easiest, since the tree line blocks some of the wind", yet the best shooters always shoot near the airstream trailer that totally blocks the wind for the first ten yards... ;) Things that make you go hmmm...

That chicken makes it all worth it, you can feed an entire family of one with that monster...!

Robert,

I miss-wrote your score due to a mix-up of your first and second card scores (248 and 240) on the result sheet where your first card WAS listed as 248,but had an arrow indicating it was prolly your second card, which was shown as 240. I blame the error of changing not changing the second number when I corrected the first number on my dyslexia, but your TOTAL of 731, (which is a great score btw) was correct. I never look forward to writing match reports, since the guys that actually shoot are there to review the results (remember I read all the scores before you left) and fail to see much advantage in non-competitors needing to see em. I have guys volunteer huge extra effort to score fast enough so we can see the results before going home, and I'm not about to criticize them about new math or anything else about the free help, that's for sure.

I have shot more 250's on the actual bench you used, but prefer the other end for two reasons .... first because the right end gives more room for a left handed shooter, and second because the new guys seem to prefer the left end. I put my stuff on the far end bench before you got there, but you didn't notice I gave it up to a guy that came later because all the others were taken (this is why I shot on the second relay) ... fact is the "left end guys" always shoot on that end even when they can take any bench they want.

I do what I can to run a fair match, and there are a few guys like Roger, Matt S., and Jim Z. that helped me build the range and they perform yeoman's duty gratis year in and year out to keep our little club going.

I had a great time at this match. I feel honored to be treated as part of the family at this event. The benches location etc is always part of the fun at any benchrest match. Makes for fun drama. The food and fellowship is the highlight for me. The shooting takes a back seat to the friends I have made. I hope to be welcomed back so I can beat Mike again. Maybe I can will back some of the prizes he took at EBR 😃

We were glad to have you there... We can go head to head, but only if I shoot your Safari .177 with Athlon Ares ETR scope, and you shoot my .22 FX Streamline? Or maybe, since neither of us did so good on the 100M shoot, we can do that one Unlimited, the .30 Safari versus the .30 Bobcat? And we flip a coin to determine who shoots what gun... ;) The mind boggles...
