Ted Bier-.177 Cal BR-Throwing down the gauntlet

Ted,

I know you've done a lot of development on 22, 25, and 30 cal rifles and pellets for 100 yard BR shooting. What about the diminutive .177 at shorter ranges. Not all of us have 100 yard ranges available. I've been working with an FX Dreamline Tact which started out as a compact but now sports a 500 mm barrel. I'm learning that this rifle has great potential with, not only pellets, but slugs too. I've tried NSA 22.5 and 15.0 and JSB KO 13.4 gr. Installing the 500 mm barrel gave me 100 fps more than the 300. 10.4 gr JSB now shoots 1000 fps and KO 895. I haven't used the dual transfer port yet or the Huma slug kit. How about a little develpmento program for this caliber? I'd like to have a .177 cal match at TO this season to test the waters.

Right? And now the South Africans are rockin 700mm? I have been told a .177 redesign is coming? Maybe it already has? I know I have 3 600mm liners that simply don’t work at all! Way over choked and that has been heavily discussed on agn.

the 500’s do seem a bit better? I have 2 that are incredible with pellets and barley minute of starling with slugs? Slower the better with slugs on mine, sub 900, I don’t know why? I just hope they nail it, I am really loving the .177 slug concept, I shot it more this winter than all the others combined! Cheap and better bc than any pellet in any caliber, when the backstop is not great? Distance wise, 900 yds vs 350, Switch to pellets and go ultra safe👍🏻
What’s more exciting is everyone and their dog is starting to make .177 slugs now we just need liners dammot. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

I have been shooting a pulsar hp 177 using nsa slugs and KO’s also with outstanding results. I do have the abilities to shoot out to 125yrds on hi power @940 with the KO’s. But I do most of my shooting @75yrds, and on calm days I shoot on lo power @730 with great results with a lot more shots on a fill. The slugs shoot impressive groups at all speeds and seems that the 177 is very slug compatible as well as pellets, but on windy conditions I go to hi power and an amazed how well they do. Good luck

I have bitten the slug, and thrown a lot of money into turning my .177 / Maverick 600 into a 700 mm with the sole purpose of only shooting slugs with that. in factory 600 mm form the gun never really shot any pellet or slug well.

I also live in the same town as viking airgunner, and i think in the future i will get my bottles filled at his place, we will probably also go shooting.

In regard to the resent videos from Gerhard in SA shooting whopping 20 grain in FX guns, which i think is fair to call heavy slugs in the standard superior barrel, i am a bit confused as before i was of the understanding that the standard superior barrels was only good for lighter slugs, but 20 grain are anything but light in 177.

Maybe the same observations dont apply to the .177 caliber ?

My 500 mm Vulcan 3, also do slugs pretty respectable at 50 and 85 M with out trying much, but that one will be my pellet gun going forward.

IF ! they make a dedicated slug liner for .177, i will of course pick up one of those. and if FX want me to test it they can just throw one such barrel over to me ( well they have to throw hard but as the bird fly the FX factory are not that far from the Danish town i live in )

There also is Soren SD which also shoot the .177 rifles pretty good.

In regard to shooting a BR card, ever since i got my behind handed to me by a decade old rifle shot by a person i usually out shoot, well i have been wanting for some payback. And i am sure with my Vulcan 3 i can get that, the Maverick,,,, well i will have to see it before i believe it

I’ve had good luck with NSA 12.5gr slugs in a Walther Dominator 1250 of all things. I tried the 10gr Knock-Out slugs, not as good as the NSA. I have been tempted to try the 15gr NSA, I know the 1250 isn’t good with lighter slugs. I know it is better in the breeze with the slugs than it is with pellets, not to say it isn’t more sensitive to wind than say a .22 caliber.

try the 13 gr knockouts as they are larger in diameter than the 10 but slightly smaller than the 12.5 nsa

something everyone shooting 177 slugs should do first is to find out the inner diameter of their barrel. will save money on the wrong size slugs cause if their too small or large they won’t shoot well

700mm can be bought at krale or huma air :D

https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/interesting-100yd-group-with-nsa-177-slugs/

These were the best results I could get back then. Having learned a bit more I'm confident the 100yd group would tighten up considerably. Unfortunately I have a now irreplaceable supply of original NSA .177 slugs in 15.5g, 18g and 21g. Sadly the new one's aren't as accurate for me.

As for trying with pellets, I don't think they would be predictable enough in the wind to use in an EBR setting regardless of what's pushing them.
