Target focus question

I hesitate to even bring this up because it seems like something I should know. On the other hand, how will I learn if I don't ask, right?

I'm fairly new to shooting with a scope. When I look through the scope that came with my air rifle (Gamo) at my usual shooting distance of 20 yards, the crosshairs are sharp and clear, but the target is a little blurry. Is that because it is a cheap scope, or is there some adjustment that I need to make? It's a standard 4x32 scope. Adjusting the eyepiece is to focus the crosshairs, not the target, right? By the way, I am 60 years old and wear no-line bifocals if that matters.

I think my groups would shrink some if I could see the target clearly. It would be nice to know that I can consistently hit what I shoot at.

Granpappa there aren't any stupid questions or they would have banned me long ago :) The rear focus is just for the crosshairs as you had already said . On other scopes with an Adjustable objective the objective focus is used to focus the target and hopefully eliminate parallax. But on less expensive scopes you have to usually choose between best focus , and parallax free . Scopes without an adjustable objective are usually focused at a pre set distance like 100 yards

I shoot with Bifocals also, If you have an old set of none Bi you might try them, My eyes are not so bad that I just have to have them so at times I even had to take them off to get a good focus.
Try this Take your scope off and look through it straight in through the none mag part of your glasses what you most likely will find is the crosshairs will be fuzzy but you will be able to see your target.
I asked my eyeglass doc to set my bi's lower on my glasses and it helped a lot but even so I kept my old set of non bi to shoot with
And like Joe said a good quality scope will make a huge difference
