Target Backstop in the works

I was in touch with Dirtydovi about building a target backstop for my back yard 33 yard range. I went to Tractor Supply and picked up a 4’x6’x3/4” piece of stable mat which I cut into 4-2’x3’ pieces 2 of them will go into storage for when the others fall apart. The mat is pretty heavy about 26# per piece for each quarter. I will be making a frame for it using 2x3s and 3/4 “ plywood. The stable mat smells like fresh blacktop I think it’s made out of chopped up tires and a tar based binding agent. Since the finish backstop will weigh around #65 I’m thinking I may add some cart wheels to avoid a heart attack from moving it around.

The only difference in the mat from mine and Dirtydovi# is on the back side mine has little circles and Dirty has slits the front side is relatively smooth. The stable mat was $45 and I spent $25 on the lumber I’ll be painting the wood after I assemble the frame just for weather protection as it will be outside for the duration. I’m planning on attaching the mats to the framework with 2” screws . The 2’x3’ will extend a foot below the frame to keep the target off the ground. I’ll add pictures of the finished product in a week or so

Brian,

It's nice to check out the progress you're making on your backstop!
I really like the looks of the version of stall mat you found.. Those circles would make great spots to stick small round stick-on bullseyes..
Weight - Haha Yeah, I wasn't kidding.. When these things are fully assembled, they're built like tanks.

Keep up the nice work, and hopefully you'll be sinking pellets into yours in no time.

🙂👍

Brian stable mat makes great AG backstop material and I’ve used it on many of my home range targets. One problem I’ve encountered is the possibility of ricochet. This has only happened when shooting my FWB300 (580fps) at 20 yards. It seems that while there isn’t enough FPE to stick the pellet in the mat, there is enough to send it back at the shooter. No problem shooting at 55yds. The .25s enter and stick and the .17s (900fps) either stick or bounce harmlessly a few feet. Great stuff though and I intend to keep using it. Uj
