taipan veteran tuning

My chronograph got here today and i did some testing and think i got a lemon. My first shot read 1005 fps then the next read 950fps followed by 937, this is before adjusting anything. I would say 60% of my shots failed to read and gave me an error and then when it did read the consistency was terrible. I ended up adjusting my hammer spring 3/4 a turn and it read 890 fps and then 900. so i just left it at that and proceeded to shoot five groups and my grouping was excellent with the 25grain jsb's and i got almost 10-15 more shots before going under 130bar. I still got extremely wide spread on my velocity readings after adjusting to 890-900fps some would just jump to 930-940 then down to 860. I'm not gonna touch anything else and just return this chronograph and spend some money and invest in a quality chrono. Pretty frustrating day to say the least.

Yea i highly doubt the gun is just jumping from 890 to 940 fps, especially with how many errors i and failure to read i got atleast i hope not. I'm just chalking it up to a bad chrono and going to order one where i can get a consistent reading after 2 shots then it just doesnt read the next 5. What chronograph do you guys use and recommend, currently using this caldwell one and i very much do not like it

Aloha tempo47,

I too had the Caldwell chronograph and if the lighting was not right it would give error readings like 4-5 out to 10 shots. So I bought the fx chronograph and have not have any issues with it. I did look at the labrador radar chronograph but the price and the set up is what kept me from purchasing it, the fx is cheaper and easier to set up. Just my .02

Aloha,

Keone

A good chronograph is almost essential to air rifle shooting and tuning, but it can also result in spending too much time chasing numbers rather than paying attention to the target. If your rifle is really shooting that erratically, it will show up at 50 yards or more. I currently own my second Veteran, and both were among my most consistent shooting rifles. Obviously, any maker can produce a rifle with problems, but I bet your Veteran will be fine.

So i guess it is my gun and not the chrono, i got a new chrono in already and im having this issue. First shot 890fps, next shot is 940fps can hear the power difference next shot 890 then 940. Every other shot its exactly 50 fps faster and you can just tell my the sound. What could be causing this? I mean its EXACTLY 50 fps every other shot and im seeing a poi shift also, could it be my gun is cold from being inside going out into 95 degree weather causing this or is that unlikely?

Yea i just shot an entire tin of 25g jsb pellets i thought my gun was stable at 915-920 fps, i was wrong. The gun sat for 30 minutes went back out to shoot and it was back up to 950 fps, basically if i turn my hammer spring down below 950 fps it just creeps back up to 950 fps. Basically seems like i can only tune my gun velocity up and not down, if i turn my hammer spring for more power my shots are consistent if i leave it at 950 fps it stays consistent, the second i go below 950 fps i get a wide variation of velocities and poi impact shifts. I'm pretty frustrated i honestly did not think my gun would have these kind of issues at this price point, and if changing a regulator is what people have to do to make a 1500$ gun shoot properly thats pretty unfortunate.
