Taipan Veteran?

I've bought and sold a lot of airguns over the years and I still have my Tiapan Mutant. Over 10000 rounds through it and never had a single problem....not one. Sent it down to Charlie Frear for a full going through for next year. Didn't need anything just thought it deserved a trip to the spa. Outstanding performance outstanding guns.

@oldmanblue with his Taipan. I am not sure if it is a CZ or LW barrel, but he does know how to work an Airgun. Personally, I have never shot one. Hope to change that some day soon.

What length barrel is the Mutant?

I have both and they seem just about equally as accurate. I have to say theres a slight edge in regards to the older 22 CZ barrels from the Mutants and CZ200 compared to the new ones that's only if you need to shoot at 100+ yards. If normal 50 yards and under you probably won't see any noteworthy difference.

Another interesting observation is that old LW barrels seem more accurate and pellet friendly than newer ones. Talking 10-15+ years and older compared to todays. They tend to shoot just about anything you feed them straight and very forgiving to non perfect die lot batches too.

I'm curious to see how their .25cal CZ barrel performs but I'm not opposed to their LW versions either. I'm also still waiting for them to come out with a mid-cocking Veteran. I've heard so many great things about the Veteran but it's just one of the reasons I haven't picked up one yet.

I have an older early model 25 Veteran shorty and it's a MOA or less shooter with JSB 25.39 Kings and Polymags which really surprised me. Wasn't really into 25 cal at that time but the seller guaranteed the sub moa or better accuracy so I bought it (lightly used) since he knew I was (still am and even more so today) an accuracy nutcase.

@ClarkT I have a Taipan Veteran Compact in 25 cal and with Sumo moderator on there it is mouse fart loud. And it is TRUE, Taipans are built like a tank. So I don't see any issues ever with this gun, even the single shot try made of steel and has some heft to it.

I think the Compacts and Longs have LW barrels and the Standards CZ, but don't quote me on that. Also, maybe with Covid Taipan maybe got barrels from CZ vs LW so they could continue production last spring when LW was closed. Again, I am not sure on any of this the former comment.

Last comment the .25 cal is a great round and I can't wait to take it to the field when I can.

My .22 Standard Veteran has a LW barrel, and it is superb. The talk about the CZ barrels being better is way overblown. Maybe if you averaged the performance of 100 each, you might see a trend, but I kind of doubt it. I would not exchange mine for another of any make. The rifle itself seems about as bullet proof as any I have owned. I don't have more than a thousand pellets through mine, so I can't give a testimonial to its longevity, but I will be very surprised if it does not prove to be extremely reliable. It is also only the second air rifle I have owned (along with the HW100) that shoots as well from the magazine as with the single shot tray. And its anti-double loan feature is designed so that you can de-cock with a pellet in the chamber, and then re-cock without double loading. I really like that feature, because I don't like to move around with a cocked rifle, especially one with all the creep adjusted out of the sear engagement. It's simple, robust parts, great trigger, quiet, accurate, not sure what more one could ask. It's not cheap, but it's still a solid value.

Also, I want to add I have a FX Impact Compact .22 (heading out the door for an L2), a 2020 Brocock Compatto Sniper XR .177 and the Taipan Compact in .25 cal, as mentioned above. The Taipan is the quietest of the three power for power if you discount the pellet hitting the target.

Yes, the Taipans aren't cheap, but honestly, of my three the best value for the money and a bit unique.

@JohnnyPDX How can you blame yourself????!!! It is never the shooter it is always the gun’s fault when you miss the target? Or as some (too many) people believe.

That's funny. I am definitely the weak link in the card smackdown game. There are 34 cards remaining to be shot, just waiting for daylight and 'shooting' for a high 90's hit rate. Just gotta focus and not get in a hurry.

To the OP... go for it. My other awesome shooter is a BSA R10 SE (thumbhole) Nutmeg Laminate .22. It's my consistent friend as well as the Taipan. No more bargain guns for me I just want the best.
