Suppressor design for the Texan 45

Many moons ago i did some "big" suppressors for FX .22 PCP's.

ø40mm~1,6"diam x 200mm~7.9" carbon tubes.

Nothing much: Delrin/acetal front and rear, CF tube, Polycarbonate rings/baffels and loads of professional PC grade silencer wool.

I also had a proffesion in HiFi speaker design and made use of that in the following way.

In speaker design there is a golden rule which says that dimentional relations must be of the following rule: 1 : the thierd root of 2 : the thierd root of 4, in short 1:1.26:1.59.

That way no standing waves between two oposite flats can resonate with other standing waves.

So i made first chamber 1.59x, second chamber 1.26x and last chamber 1x and the final length is 3.76x you calculate in reverse from here ;-) .

Now the next experiment will be a slip over schroud/silencer for my future Texan .45.

That thing belches out an astonishing 670+ cui of air so bigger is better.

I have ordered a ø50mm~2" x 500mm~20" carbon tube from China and inend to make a telescope "shroud"/silencer combo also known as a telescopic silencer. I'll hold the tube at the barrel when i have rifle in hand and see when it begins to look silly. The rest i will put to good use with proven desings.

Has anyone done anything like this ?

Any hinters?

Silencers are a lot like car engines. You can make a lot of fiddle to a small space and make it work good, but nothing beat cubics!

You might search out and read all STO 's threads on moderator design (or PM him for help). He's got some amazing articles on suppressor design here at AGN.

My understanding is it's more about disrupting the airflow, slowing down the pulse of pressure and keeping the sound wave from propagating outward. A totally empty can will do some of that and knock off some dB but not very efficiently. That's where the systems of baffles and/or sound absorbing material used in various airgun moderators comes in.

I'm nor an acoustic engineer but I don't believe resonance is the main cause of the noise in a moderator, but experiments are always interesting, keep us informed please.

I would like some guidance from whoever is administrator here at AGN on just what is acceptable to discuss and what isn't. Since there have been some detailed posts by STO on his moderator experiments I thought it was OK. Since the court case that set Federal guidance that Airgun moderators were not regulated like firearms silencers (and that felons could own them) most forums don't limit discussion.any more.

I do know that most firearms silencers do a rotten job as airgun moderators, seen it tried by several people who had high dollar, very effective legal silencers on their firearms and tried swapping to their airguns and they didn't work as well as a DonneyFL (and I don't think DonnyFL is that great, I've 'heard' other moderators that do better)

As per that other site, I've been there and honestly was not impressed by the Airgun section. I think there's more innovation and experience here and at GTA.

I built a few before donny...but now I'm lazy .if I need to suppress some noise I take the Visa out problem solved. 😁. Donny the silence master ..but in a serious note have found that deep cones like the ones in the taipan long are great. That gun only has 3 cones like 1 1/4 deep and it suppress 65fp to back yard friendly now that's efficiency..when i then use on top of the 3 cones a donny shogun you can barely hear anything Doug moderators for airforce are like that deep cones design that works as n air striper. you could find a video on YouTube of him shooting a 308 with like 200fp and you can barely hear the shot...the are like 1 3/4 thick and have a few more baffles...both designs are more like barrel shroud .
