Tuning Superior or Superior Heavy liner

It’s probably been discussed several times already but I’m not very proficient at the sites search function....

I have an FX Crown Mk1 in .25 with the regular 600mm barrel kit using a Smooth Twist X liner. It is currently shooting 3/8” groups at 50 yds with 25.39 JSBs, so I’m very happy with that. But I would like to be able to shoot slugs for distance and for the variety in weights. I understand the Superior Liner is good with both pellets and some slugs, especially the FX Hybrids. However, the Hybrids are very pricey and I want to shoot NSAs, etc. Do I need the Superior Heavy liner? Is it still good with pellets down to the 25.39s? I’m currently sitting on a box each of NSA 29.0 and 33.5s which grouped horribly out of my STX liner (hey, I had to try!)

Any thoughts on which liner for Santa to bring me will be greatly appreciated. Slug type/weight too!!

Well, I think the heavy is intended for slugs with a larger contact patch. (heavier, typically). So it really depends on what specific dimension you want to shoot. If it is long, hollow, and light, get a heavy liner, if it is a solid mid weight boat tail, but has the contact patch of most lighter slugs, get a regular superior liner.

I'd also recommend getting one of Earnest's carbon fiber sleeves, and bonding it to the liner. Should make the gun shoot more consistently with a variety of slugs with similar diameter and contact patches of course. And less sensitive to harmonic tune.

Superior and heavy both shoot lighter weight .249 NSA slugs great! No issues with the heavier .250 slugs like 34 and 36 grain slugs either. No need to overpower it and shoot at 950+ FPS. You will be surprised that most accurate groups can be at mid 800FPS range. If you want to shoot pellets too then stick with superior.

EDIT: to shoot slugs well in superior liner with 1:23 twist rate you need minimum speed of around 880 to get descent accuracy based on the stability factor.

ernest row’s carbon sleeves are a must for shooting slugs @ higher power IMHO.

Not really a must I get .5 to 1 inch groups @ 100 yards with the NSA 33.5, 36, 36.2 and VK 34gr slugs with my Impact no carbon sleeve. At various velocities from 740 to 960fps. Still I am sure the shrouds help maintain a zero.

And now that I have said that I recently did a carbon fiber shroud on the same gun that puts tension on the barrel. Now the barrel is much more stable. Still need to get out and do some more tuning though.

carbon sleeve for the liner AND carbon barrel tension sleeve would be as good as FX barrel system could be stiffness wise without going to a fully carbon wrapped barrels like fancy powder burners but those barrel alone are price of mid range guns. None of it obviously is a “must” but harmonic is a pain at higher power and long 700mm barrels.....at least for me.

I don't believe it's a must. I get groups good enough that most people would ask for proof... Without it. However the gun was very sensative to the tune, and the type of projectile. (shooting 700mm crown, switching to 500mm superior)

I know the superior liners like being run harder and faster. And making them more rigid will only increase consistency across a wider margin in the tune, and a wider range of projectiles.

That's the theory anyhow, and the evidence does show that.

EXACTLY my point! The reason for being sensitive to tune is harmonics or barrel vibration especially at higher power and 700mm barrel. Is it a must? No, but it should would save a lot of pellets trying to find that tune.

Example: my 700mm .25 impact shoots 2-3 inch groups with 33 grain nsa slugs at 100 yards at speed between 850-920 FPS. I haven’t found that tune above 850 FPS that groups well yet. I’ve gone through 3 boxes of slugs and just couldn’t find a high power tune that groups well, was going to try indexing and what not next. Same everything the 33 grain slugs would shot sub mow or 1 inch groups at any speed between 800-840 FPS. Clear sign of harmonic kicking my ass. I literally just installed the carbon sleeve and will see if it truly helps like I think it would. From firearm experience barrel stiffness is EVERYTHING if you want to be accurate long range. Granted I’m happy shooting sub Moa groups at 840fps which is a ton of power already but I’m a tinkerer so want to see if I can get it to be a 900fps laser.....it’s fun to try at least.

same impact with 600mm .22 superior was shooting sparrows at 120 yards with 23 grain nsa at only 840fps. Also can’t get it to group at 880-980fps......gave up after 3 boxes of lugs also.hahaha

Steve I’ve been very happy with the standard superior 600mm .25 on a dreamline. I’m an average shooter and get 1/2” groups with NSA 29.0 and 33.5 slugs - 65 yards. I get better groups usually with JSB King and King Heavy MK I or MK II pellets too.

The standard superior liner blows me away. It literally shoots everything I put in it. JSB Hades, AVS slugs, Griffin slugs, JSB Knock outs, FX hybrids and on and on. I’ve never had a gun that could do this.

Also installed a CF liner sleeve and CF barrel support from Ernest Rowe as others have.

get a superior you won’t regret it

Qball I have the EXACT same issue with NSA 26.8’s and 29.5’s. I know your pain. Anything above 825-850 and my groups go to hell. That just reminded me to try those same slugs again, now that I have Ernest’s CF sleeve glued to my liner.

sweet!!! Let us know how it goes! Hopefully I can sneak away tomorrow morning to sling some slugs down the range with the new carbon sleeves and tension spacer. Should of gotten the full carbon tension barrels sleeve also but they are out of stock for now.

Caesar, thanks for adding to this thread. I will go with the Superior. And I’m going to get both the carbon fiber sleeve and barrel tensioner as soon as they are back in stock (both are sold out for 600mm .25). If I have time when I get everything, I will shoot multiple groups (to get an average) for several pellets/slugs in my Regular STX liner and then repeat with Superior liner, Superior Liner with sleeve, and Superior liner with sleeve AND barrel tensioner. If I’m really ambitious I guess I could do both STX and Superior liners WITHOUT the sleeve but with the barrel tensioner installed too!

Again, thanks everyone!

Steve

caesar, you said you have the carbon liner on your barrels. if you can, can you measure and tell me the outer diameter of Ernest rowe liner. I'm looking to get a liner to try out but they are out of stock. Im pretty sure i can get buy with a 9 mm inner diameter. But by my measurements i need an 11 mm outer diameter. that isn't an easy size to locate. you can find them either bigger or smaller. just want to make sure i start off as close as possible.

Steve, do you have some results already or are you still testing?

I'm very curious for the outcome.

Pieterdg,

The carbon fiber sleeve and shroud/tensioner are both still Sold Out for .25 600mm (I just checked again a minute ago). So, no, I haven’t had an opportunity to do the comparison tests. Winter and the holidays have also slowed down my airgunning for the moment. I still do plan on running the comparisons when I get my hands on the parts and the weather is good. Sorry to throw that idea out there and leave everyone hanging!!
