Sub 12fpe Mako Squirrel & Projectile Recovery

Nice video!

although the slug hit right on the shoulder where all the bones are so there isn’t a huge surprise in terms of expansion. If you can get a pure vital shot and find a way to recover the slug would be amazing. I have recovers 177 hades shot at 600FPS and had great expansion because it hit the shoulder bones but goes straight pass through on pure vital still even at 25 yards. It would be sick if it can expand this well and still lodge under the skin/no pass through on a pure vital shot.

@intenseaty22 I know you already saw the photo of the dove I hit with a mako yesterday, but at 17.1 fpeish. The exit whole was probably 1/8 " on the dove. I enjoyed your video too, Precision Ballistics for sure came up with a good product, and I wish them success.

intenseaty22,

Nice shooting and video of slug recovery! KUDOS to you(and @Blackpaw) for finding(and @Blackpaw for purchasing and delivering) a slug that will perform well sub 12 ft/lb! Most are too heavy(to be shot fast enough to stabilize)or too short(jam while chambering) or just plain not accurate enough.

Imho, the exciting thing about using a slug for sub 12 ft/lb wouldn't be expansion, but resistance to wind deflection. If a sub 12 ft/lb slug was close to as accurate as a pellet, the slug would have the higher BC and thereby, allow accurate sub 12 ft/lb shooting in higher wind conditions and/or at farther distances. If I could be accurate in the wind(and/or at longer distances), I could put the projectile in the proper kill zone of the animal. I look forward to following your(and @Blackpaw's) testing of the .177 Makos.

Keep up the good work! Love the new avitar, btw👍

@ghostranger169 @intenseaty22 and I went in together and bought slugs. I have sent some of my share of the slugs out to a couple AGN members for testing. One guy crunched the numbers and after I gave him the specs from my 50 yard pigeon shot with my buddy’s brocock compatto. He said the BC of the mako was equal to or better than a 25 grain pellet 50 yards. With my prophet compact it has a longer barrel than the Brocock and I can crank up the hammer spring and regulator pressure, I know I can easily go 20 FPE with the slug, but that isn’t its purpose.

I've been shooting the .177 Makos out of my HW100 BP-K (17fpe) for awhile now and although at 50 yards they aren't as accurate as Polymags, past 50 they blow everything else away. Last summer I took several ground squirrels with head shots at 70+ lasered yards. Shooting red squirrels under 50 yards they produced a very resounding pauwk!

I have 3 mags loaded with them for Thursdays squirrel hunt.

To date, my longest shot with the .177 sub 12fpe Revere. 37 yards with the Mako Slugs in wind. Had to holdover & windage a bit. Spot on on the shoulder. Hard to see on that picture, but it’s the small round center on the hide. Didn’t mushroom, but did have some serious deformation & shattered the distal shoulder. No pass through, as you can see, I recovered the slug.
