Struggling with accuracy

I need a little help (or a lot)

I am new to PCP air rifles. My normal game is center fire benchrest (100 and 200 yards).

I bought a Red Wolf HP .22 from Air Guns of Arizona - and they have been great to work with.

The rifle will not shoot. I have tried cleaning (Balistol with pull through and patch), 5 or so different pellets (18jsp, 25jsp, 33jsp and others), I have tried different power settings, I have lubed some of the pellets, I have tried 3 different scopes, i have replaced the barrel, I bored out the Huggett moderator by .2mm to ensure no clipping. And probably some toiler stuff too.

I cannot get the gun to shoot reliably under 0.5" at 25 yards in a zero condition.

Every now and again it will shoot a 5-shot dot but will not repeat.

By way of comparison, I have a new FX Impact and I can reliably shoot 0.150" 5 shot groups at the same time of shooting the Daystate. There i have used only one pellet, the JSP25 grain.

Any ideas as to what I could be doing next?? This is most frustrating.

Sounds like you've got quite a bit of experience. You've done most all of the troubleshooting that I would've done except shooting single shot (with the tray not the magazine). Magazines have been known to deform pellets.

Personally, I'd call AoA and describe everything you've done & ask them to help make it right.

The first thing that comes to mind is the breech O-ring. Call AoA and ask what size it is and replace it.

What speed are you shooting at? Send the .25g out at 860-900.

When it shoots the 5 shot dot, what air pressure are you at? Does it shoot the 5 shot dot's at or near the same psi every time?

This might be a silly question but, are you sure the barrel is a .22 and not a .25? I hate to ask a question like this but, you've covered a lot of ground in your description of tests you've performed. While you're at it check to make sure the magazine or SS tray is the correct caliber as well.

If all else fails, AoA has an accuracy clause built into their warranty. Talk to them about your issue and send it back.

Did the gun come with a test target? It should have. Focus on anything done to the gun since the test target was shot. The O-ring is definitely something to check and pellet clipping too. .2mm isn't much. I had a similar problem and it was clipping. Barely clipping but enough to just screw up my groups. Drilled my moderator from .22 to .25 and it worked. Gun now shoots laser beams. Good luck. Stoti

From my experience with my RW, it will shoot everybody in the same hole at 30 yards. Your's should be able to do that too. Or at least close to it. It should be every bit as accurate as the Impact, if not more so.

I think I might be calling AoA and asking for help.

I forgot to add that - I have only shot from the single shot tray. Have also spoke to AOA many times but they can’t do too much without the gun I guess.

The 22 cal breech o'ring is 5x1.5 buna 70 if that helps.

It is a 22 for sure.

I have replaced the o-ring and the barrel. At one point I was very excited because I found a broken o-ring on the outside of the barrel behind the transfer port. Replaced that too but all it made it do was shoot quieter. It must have been broken when they first put the rifle together as the report was loud from the start.

Simple question. Have you put 200+ rds down range, i dont know what the "lead in" or "break in" expectations would be. If any! Good problem for the RW community. Kick it up fellas.

I did bore the cap out to 0.287” which is well about the .25 mark.

Excuse this but my browser is acting weird when I quote posts.

It it did come with a test target and not a very good one so that was a worry in itself. When I spoke to aoa they seemed to indicate the .250” at 25 yards was acceptable. That was a little scary to hear as I can get smaller than .150” with the Impact without even trying. The real game is at 50 yards.

This RW will shoot a .750” at 25 yards without warning and with the “wrong pellet”.

i bored the silencer out to .287” and marked it up with sharpie. There is zero sign of clipping. I have also shot the rifle without the moderator tube and it shoots just as bad.

It's an odd time when Airguns have progressed to the point where we expect the measure of acceptability to be as small as we do even while retailers keep trying to increase our expectations (at a price) when there REALLY hasn't been much improvement in that arena for a couple years... just musings... not complaining. There are guns that will do what we expect. I ordered a Red Wolf. I made a condition of the sale actual 50y testing, I haven't heard back... (not surprised except that they did charge my credit card), it's been 7 business days... My guess is that they cant get one to shoot as well as the one that they publicly tested at the same range. I'll be happy to cancel the order and will be calling tomorrow.

I used to go to an Airsoft retailer to get my CO2 filled. We'd talk about all kinds of stuff while I waited. When airguns came up, he went on and on endlessly, over multiple visits, about how much fun he and his buddies had with a friends Airgun hitting a target at 50yards... he was REALLY into it. But.... I haven't mentioned yet… the target was.... a steel 55gal drum....

Also, I was down at AOA and while there, I was told the magic pellet was the "Redesigned " . We shot there at 22 yards and it DID make a noticeable difference in that rifle. Good luck getting some right now, though.

I was told this too by AOA. Problem is that they are out of stock.

But when I bought the rifle from AOA I was told that the holy grail for the RW HP is the 33 grain beast. Then I was told the 18 Grainer is the gold standard for 22 and now the 25 grain monster and the redesigned monster. It all depends on the person you are talking to.

At at the end of all of this I will not be disappointed as I have learned a lot more by the RW being a problem than the FX Impact being a tack driver ...

I have found that a good load (pellet) will make a good gun shoot great and a bad gun shoot better. If you have one that doesn't shoot you can chase it for ever and never be satisfied. I'd lean towards sending the rifle back to AOA If you're shot center fire bench rest you know the game. Kicking a dead horse. When you lay down the kind of money spent you shouldn't be expected to have to work to get the gun shooting fine. You work to get it shooting BETTER then fine. Agree?
