Steyr LP50 HP?

I have wanted a Steyr LP50 HP for years. I have shot the10meter version, but not the HP. I wonder if the HP version is loud enough to be an annoyance on an acre, neighbors are not that close. I have a bad wrist and can hold that grip without pain and like that it has a clip. I just have held off because of unknown and price. I buy stuff sometimes within minutes know I am not satisfied..

I realize this is not spot-on the subject of this thread, but it might be of interest anyway. From AIRGUN CHRONICLES- Thirty Years of Airgun Testing and Competition

Gorgeous; but this LP-5 averaged no better than 3/4” groups at 25 yards.

I have both seen one, owned one and used one for some time. If I had to choose between the AP16 and LP50HP I'd go with the Steyr, very easy choice.

The Ataman i had was rough around the edges, subpar fit and finish, loading was far from smooth and the magazines had indexing issues. Only thing it had going for itself over the Steyr is the easily mountable LDC.

Here's the testcard that came with one of the LP50s, far more accurate than I am with a pistol!

If you just want to shoot 25m targets, go for the normal LP50 and adjust the hammer setting to it's maximum. That will give you around 170/175 meters per second which is more than enough for hitting targets at 25m accurately. My LP10 long gives me around 120 shots per fill at 156 m/ps, tried the power adjustment just to see how far I would get with it, and I still got a more than acceptable 80 shots per fill. And it's backyard friendlier and more manageable than a HP version. Just my two cents.

yes, i can confirm that.

im using a moderator on my lp50 and i put some thin tape on the 3 barrel ports to make it dead quiet

its so much fun to shot! im switching very often between the classic sights and the red dot. do i need a second lp50 ?

An LP50 owner here. If I were to pay, almost $2000 more for a HP version, I am not about to start using adapters and tape. I had better be right out of the box!

Steyr just does not get it, they should offer these guns threaded and with an optics rail! These guns are not used by 10 meter shooters, but by fun shooters, and are mostly use them in back yards!

I contact Steyr about this, and looks like this will never happen!

Let me correct you here. The LP5 and LP50 are match grade rapid fire pistols for (yes, 10-meter for a fact!!!) competition shooters and for training 25-meter rimfire rapid fire, which is an official (open sights) ISSF shooting discipline. They are most certainly NOT created for recreational shooters. The high price and the fact that all about these pistols scream MATCH might give something away in that respect, next to the description of these pistols on the Steyr website. If you have the money to buy one, by all means, go for it because they are the best that money can buy! But please don't complain about the lack of options that are not intended for it's original purpose.

That said, there are rails you can buy that allow you to mount optics on any Steyr pistol with a shrouded barrel such as the LP5, LP10, and LP50 series.

Hello Jonnes,

Yes I understand. I am familiar with 10 meter match shooting, I am a former 10 meter Dutch air rifle national champion. I also own an LP50, I would guess that I have 50K shots trough it ( if not more). I easily go trough 250 pellets in a single shooting session

IF the LP50 was only made for ISSF style shooting, it would no longer be made, as I believe that the rapid fire air pistol discipline no longer exists.

But that is not what most LP50 owners use this pistol for (I most certainly don't). And as a target pistol for static targets its trigger is rather poor.

Sure you can buy adapters to mount optics, but why not give the gun an 11 mm rail? Why not offer a threaded versions?

Anshutz is currently offering their match rifles with a thread... I would like to see the LP50 more as a modular gun, and not as a strictly 10 meter pistol. And I would think that a lot of people would want the same

It took Steyr donkeys ages to offer a quick-fill on their HP rifles and they are still not threaded... But then again, Theoben was also of the opinion that people did not need quick fills and pressure gauges.......

Hello Jonnes,

Again, correction my fellow Dutchman. ;-)

https://www.knsa.nl/sportaanbod/evenementen/schietsporttotaal/onderdelen/5-schots-luchtpistool/

As you can see, it is still an official discipline, even in The Netherlands

The ISSF rule book on 5-shot air pistol:

https://www.issf-sports.org/getfile.aspx?mod=docf&pane=1&inst=290&file=2017_ISSF_Rules_-_10m_Five-Shot_Air_Pistol_-_Edition.pdf

And last but not least, there is the product information on the website of Steyr themselves, which clearly mentions what it's for: "Being a great 5 shot weapon for the training of any dynamic pistol disciplines, the LP 50 is even more useful!"

I don't want to sound like a smart a$$, but these are the facts. 10-meter air pistol rapid-fire is still very much alive, and with the LP5x series air pistols, Steyr was focussing on that group of sporters. Most definitely not the recreational kind.

@Jonnes. Ok, I did not know that this was still a discipline. I had read somewhere that the KNSA wanted to get rid of their fast fire targets (klap schijven).

But I would love to see a version of the LP50, with a threaded barrel, no hybrid holes, no air stripper, no match grip. But with optics rail. I spent a good part of my life in the UK, and the LP50s were very popular there and mainly for recreational shooting. As a teenager and in my 20s I was a 10 meter shooter (roosjes melker), but I cannot see myself going back to that.

The problem is also that there is no competition as far as I know, Feinwerkbau no longer does Semi auto. There was the Rohm Twin master, but is really a revolver and in double action it sucks. (At least I cannot shoot it accurately in D.A.). There is the obscure Drulov DU10, but it is CO2 and lacks power.

@Blackthunder, have a look at the Ataman AP16 or Kalibrgun Ocelot. I think that's the type of pistol you're looking for, except for the semi-auto part. With a little tuning of the trigger group, you can turn that thing into a very smooth high-power shooter. It comes with all the options you want and looks the bees knees! Krale in Staphorst sells them, and the beauty of it all, they're cheaper than the Steyr match pistols. 👍

Groetjes!

Agree with Jonnes that the standard LP50 with the velocity adjusted up to 600-650 fps would be better that the HP version due to shot count. My LP50 full size came shooting the 7 g pellet at 540 fps, with plenty of room for more. Mounting an optic is pretty simple by removing the rear sight and using a fabricated rail in it's place. I had the one below made from a purchased 12" piece of weaver rail. Mounts without modifying the LP50. This would also accommodate a scope.

Steyr makes a small rail that mounts on the barrel housing which can mount a reflex sight or short tube type sight.

When Steyr came out with the LP50HP version they discontinued the LP S (Silhouette) pistol which was a mistake IMO. The LP S has a dovetail for mounting optics and a longer barrel that shot a 7 g pellet at 600 fps and could be adjusted for more power. It is fed by a 5 shot magazine, cycling the bolt advances the mag for the next shot. The grip is designed more upright without a palm shelf which is better for a two hand hold. They are hard to find used but very desirable IMO. Shown at bottom in pics below.

I agree with Gwelo, the Steyr LPS is a great pistol. I bought a used one and had AZ tune it up in power and put on one of his shrouds. It’s shooting at 720 using the JSB 10.34 heavy, for about 25 shots. The grip is very comfortable and not bulky. Before the shroud it was definitely not backyard friendly, a very loud pop that turned heads. Incredible accuracy with the pistol too.
