Steyr Hunting 5A Scout Long Term Review

my original trigger spring;

11mm lenght

3,8mm Outer Diameter

0,5mm Wire

im using now:

12mm lenght

3mm Outer Diameter

0,3mm wire

with that smaller spring pulling weight is reduced but only untill the sears starts moving. i adjusted the first stage travel to none - so the lighter spring doesnt help me at all.

i think thats because there is another spring in the trigger unit that keeps a sear under tension. its a stiff one and im not sure if its a good idea to change it.

could be possible that this high tension is needed to keep the semi automatic running.

i did not polished the sears yet - they look pretty good to me but im not an expert on that part.

Thats the trigger sear spring - and the important one!

8mm long

3,4mm outer diameter

0,5mm wire

exchanged :

11mm long

3mm outer diameter

0,3mm wire

its much weaker but a bit too long (could start to bend)

i will change it to a shorter one but for now its working:

the trigger pull is now ridiculous light: 60g / 2.1 oz

thats like on real 10m target match rifles. 9 from 10 people will fire it accidentally if not used to it 👍

i shot several pellets and its working well for me. because im limited to 5.5fpe i dont need much preload on the striker spring. i dont know if more striker preload could cause problems with this weak spring - so be careful.

I tried following Hubertus's lead and changing the sear spring to lighten the second stage. Unfortunately, the spring I tried to use had an outside diameter that was a little too fat (somewhere between 3.8 and 4 mm). There is a small hole that helps hold the spring in place. Any new spring you use MUST be 3.5mm outside diameter or less.

I also noticed that there is an adjustment hole that is filled with red seal. I suspect that adjusting the screw underneath the seal will adjust the second stage. Steyr must know that adjusting the second stage causes malfunctions and/or safety issues. Like Hubertus said... -Be careful!

I successfully lightened my second stage from the original 17 oz. to a much more target shooting friendly 6 oz. Here is a video showing the process:

I bought the spring from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076LQ3GJ1/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I still have 6 extra. So, anyone who wants one can feel free to shoot me a PM and I'll drop one in an envelope and send it to you free of charge. It will take less time than waiting for a pack of ten to arrive from China.

I really like the trigger now. I will put the original back in if I ever take the gun out rabbit hunting. Fortunately, the switch is an easy 5 minute job.

Gun performance update:

I had a great days shooting today. I really like the 6 oz. trigger mod on my Steyr H5A Scout. It was a windy day today with gusts ranging from 10-17 mph coming at me from the SE. I set up 10 official benchrest targets at 75 yards (the qualifying distance) and shot 5 shots at each. I managed to shoot a 440 with 2Xs. That would have been good enough to qualify for the 100 yard finals in Sportsmans class last year. Granted, my gusty winds were coming from a consistent direction and I hear the winds are swirling down there in Arizona, but I was happy nonetheless. The accuracy of my rifle is there.

I was just as excited to see my regulator functioning at better than usual levels. I managed a 50 shot string with only a 4.3 Standard Deviation. The average velocity was only 892 fps. I tightened the hammer spring up afterwards a tad to try to raise the velocity. I'll shoot a new set of targets and record a new shot string tomorrow to see if my adjustments kick the velocity up to my 900 fps goal.

hey guys,

i had to send my H5A to steyr austria because i was not very happy with the fps spread, accuracy and some trigger issues. could not fix that by myself.

that nice 5 shot group that i showed earlier here was a rare exception.

i bought it second hand and some of the problems showed up recently and i was not sure why. realigned the barrel a few times, reset the trigger (put back in the original spring), tried a few different jsb batches, bolted the rifle without stock to my shooting table but i was still not very happy.

after 4 days i called mr. huber and i just wanted to ask when it would be checked but he explained me, that they allready got it finished and its shipped out.

they tested my barrel and it was not a bad one but they still tried FOUR different barrels and i got the best one now. they changed the valve, adjusted the trigger, changed o-rings, did a leak test and realignd the barrel ---------------------- for free. the barrel itself (ready to use) is around 500$!!!!!

Got it back now and the fps spread went down and its the same with all three magazines. its now below 3fps extreme spread. they have shot several 5 shot groups at 25m and they are all half inch groups ctc with jsb 8,64gr

mr. huber explained me that this rifle is not the best choice for 25m benchrest if you are limited to 5,5fpe. it would need a bit more fps for hole in hole accuracy at this distance. its capable with higher fps to shot hole in hole groups at 25m with no problems all day long. i believe that :)

im still speechless about that great service and my next purchase will be a steyr again.

What a great thread. I have been watching and reading everything I can find out here on the h5a. This has to be one of the the best, most informative reads I have come across. Thanks you Airgunnation, mmahoney and everyone for all the work you put in to it. I can tell that those of you who have a Steyr have really enjoyed it and hope to join the ranks in the near future.

Just an FYI. The scout version of the Hunting 5 is only designed to be tuned to 38J (28 FPE) maximum despite the literature claiming 40J. I found out the hard way by doing a lot of tuning of the rifle. I started noticing that I'd need to tighten the hammer spring regularly to keep the velocity at the 29.5 FPE (40J) setting I had it tuned for. Eventually, the velocity couldn't be be kept that high and the velocity started to slowly decrease. I emailed Steyr and this was the reply.

So I ordered 2 new hammer springs (an extra just in case) for $1.60 each. Sure enough the new springs are longer than my old worn out one:

And the rifle is back to like new.
