Starlings must be smart??

I have those invasive Starlings in my neighborhood and shoot them with relish ! 15 years I have lived here and always had plenty of the damn things to shoot, shooting them up to 25 yards or so with from a 25 year old springer Crosman .

Then I got to a NP Crosman .22 a few years back. What a different rifle this was !! Accuracy and power were much improved and it was so much more fun to shoot because of this. My kill zone expanded and I made some pretty incredible kills with this one but I noticed the targets were less and less in my kill zone. The birds stayed away.

Then I got a PCP.22 and expanded my kill zone a tremendous amount and now my trees are mostly barren of killable vermin. I have taken to shooting the small branches chikadees and Robins sit on to try and see if they fall !!! haha they do not.

Could it be that after many years these vermin Starlings learned to avoid my kill zone ?? My neighborhood is loaded with them but not where I can shoot them .

I had a friend that was constantly battling starlings and they would quit coming around after shooting a bunch of them, a couple of times when he was out and about coming home he would notice that the starlings were back. As soon as he pulled into the driveway they would fly off! So They were keying on his truck! Park the truck in the garage shoot starlings after a while they would just leave but soon there would be another flock take up residence and the process starts all over.

This reminds me of the day I switched from open sights to a 6-24x50 scope.

A tactic I use in spring/summer is once they have fledged and are following the "parent starlings" around is to grease the adult 1st. The youngsters have no clue what happened and make easy targets.

Mike.

Amen Mike. I’m the same way. Lol

Sure wish I could locate a farm !!

Just as @L.leon said, check your local farms. Google earth your area and look for long white lines next to each other. Those are chicken farms. They’re easy to spot once you figure out what to look for.

Clean your vehicle! Inside and out.

Then, clean up a little. Shave the scruff off or trim thy beard. Look and be respectful and go to the main office. As for the OWNER. Nobody else will do. Get the damn owner. Remember His/Her name when someone goes off to find them. If they’re right there...great them with a big ass smile and a firm, confident hand shake. Keep eye contact. Compliment them on their facility. Then you’ll be asked, “Well, Rokynutz, what can we do for you?” . Get to business, “I see you have a good number of pigeons and starlings around here and I’m looking for permission. Now, im not asking for anything in return, just a safe place to shoot. I keep fresh on the trigger of my high end Airgun and you save money due to dead birds not able to eat. Win Win sitatuion right.”

At this point, they usually say, “an Airgun?!”

Chuckle a bit with a cheesy ass grin on your face. “If you have time, I have it JUST out here in my vehicle. Haha, yeah, it isn’t a Red Ryder of Yesterday’s past.”

*hand them your rifle if you have a good vibe*

as you had it to them, mention the price with a little forced nervous chuckle. (I did this with my $400 MRod , it freaking works)

offer them a clip after they gush over it. Tell them to “lead the way” if they say, “yes” to wanting to shoot it.

after they shoot it a few times, shoot something that shows your capable accuracy. 30-40yrd shot.

This system works. I have been denied 1 permission in the last 5 years. I have 21 permissions.

And if I can tell anybody, anything about acquiring a permission, BE YOURSELF!

Great advice similar to how I secured predator hunting privileges on ranches in Arizona

most are leery of rifle shooters from past poor experiences and wounded cattle. After explaining the bullet design and on a few occasions a display of accurate shooting permission was granted.

One time a buddy and I were talking to a very reluctant rancher when he said if you can hit that one you can here , pointing at a coyote only about 225 yards away. you can hunt here. I wanted to really impress so the 25-06 with varmint bullet was uncased and coyote promptly dispatched in a spectacular display of terminal performance. those 85 grainers are awesome at velocities the 25-06 can achieve
