squirrels how many live per area ?

So with my new gun i can probably kill 100s of squirrels in a year easily lol
but im wondering how many should i shoot tho we own 7 acres of timber and theres another 7 acres across the road
we have a descent amount of Oak trees and other Nut trees our bag limit is 5 a day but our season goes August 15th to the 31st of Janaruary
so wondering how many should i bag per woods for the season ?

It really depends on hunting pressure and food source. Once you watch the area you can judge how dense they are. If you want to maintain a population you don't want to over hunt. That is, shoot just what you want to eat. If you are trying to eliminate them in your area, then have at it, though it often seems impossible. I seem to have and endless onslaught of them. You could judge the scurry by putting out some black oil sunflower seeds and seeing what shows up. In one densely populated area I lived in it wasn't unusual to see 25 in the yard at once.

I never hunt the same spot continually, I may go back to a hot spot 3 or 4 times during the season. Taking 6 each time if things goes well. The spots I hunt are sometimes large acres. But if it is private land and the spot is small, say 50 acres or less I personally would not take more than 30 squirrels from there. However squirrels move in when food is plentiful and out when scarce. In my area some of the old Fox squirrels seem to stay around no matter how hard times get, but the grays will move out as soon as whatever they are cutting on is gone. The squirrels in your woods could pack up and leave & be miles away in a few days. Squirrel Migration. Even though I know they may not stay , I still hate to take too many from a hot spot, just incase they don't move out. I usually kill between 60 to 100 squirrels a year and eat everyone, except the few I give to some friends who can't hunt.

Here in New Mexico, squirrels are unprotected totally, except for the tufted fox squirrels which are easy to spot. Nonetheless, it is a black & white animal—you either have way too many, or none at all. Both of my permissions have a outdoor cats, so not many squirrels to speak of.

Collared doves and pigeons, on the other hand, are plentiful, unprotected totally, and very pesky. So if you can't hunt squirrels, there are always other game to think about.

"Auronotcs"I'm not usually too worried about taking too many squirrels here in Arkansas, but we have a ton of trees they like to eat from. And the season in AR is from May-February.

WOW, that is one long season. Our season is from mid September to end of January. 6 a day limit. We have so many hawks & bald eagles now that our squirrel population is not what it used to be. I have seen both hawks & eagles swoop down and pick up squirrels. We have some good hot spots, but squirrels are not highly populated everywhere like they used to be here. I used to kill a limit in about any woods around here in a couple hours or less. Now sometimes I can hunt all day and not do so. We see more deer a day than squirrel.

The daily limit in AR is 12 and the possession limit is 48. We can also take up to 6 deer /year, 4 does and two bucks.
