Squirrels at 40 yards. Recommendations

Oldspook - Certainly I meant my original comments very light-heartedly and of course I never mean to offend anyone. It's just my sense of humor, but that doesn't always translate well on the internet. Lesson learned on my end. But I do agree with your thoughts above.

I agree that the OP did post in this section and I took note of that, but I also took note of this sentence in his original post: "I posted in the springer section because that's what I'm using now, but would entertain thoughts on a PCP if needed for consistent accuracy."

That sentence is the only reason I was pushing PCP so hard here. Otherwise I would have not commented at all; respecting the springer theme in this section.

I'm sure he'll be quite happy with his new LGU. Looking forward to chatting with all of you on other airgun matters (and without me causing the mods to get into it!). Certainly a great community here.

I can tell you i did not flag your post either. I am a member on many forums and have never flagged a post. I disagree with it, but didnt flag it. I exclusively have springers, and i fit in none if your mentioned categories. I disagree with you, but am not offended by speech.

It is possible the mods saw it on their own, I've seen that happen on a few forums.

I'm killing squirrels (about 40 so far) out to 30-35 yards with a lower powered HW30. Headshots = DRT!!! I have the HW95 and HW97; both are more powerful and more capable of distance. I'm certainly not opposed to the PCP options; I just haven't bought one yet. Last year I had to eradicate the overpopulated squirrels because they were eating the porch wood and soffits on the house, plus eating into the chimney chase. Thus far, I've eliminated 120 last year, plus 8 so far this year--all with springers (including a Gamo Swarm Maxxim).

What makes the real difference, especially when shooting offhand, is weight, then optics. Lower weight air rifles are just easier for me to handle. Better scopes are definitely worth the difference. Better quality ammo is a must, too. I go from dime size consistency with better ammo to 3" CTC with cheaper ammo.

It's practice and confidence with what you've got that eventually makes the difference.

Have fun,

Here's one at 30. .22 caliber through abdomen, liver, diaphragm, heart and out left shoulder. DRT. The power and accuracy are there for springers...just takes practice...know your shot placements even when limited angles present themself.
