Squirrel war still ongoing

Well I saw one late yesterday evening I was looking out my sniper window and spotted one in the same tree I recently got two from. I never got a shot. This morning I looked out the sniper window and low and behold I believe there are now 5 up that tree. From the sniper window I just took one out with the Daystate Red Wolf HP. I was shooting JSB MRD's on factory medium power at 969 fps. The tree limb is at a distance of 49 yards. I made a quick shot that wasn't the best bullet placement but it did the job and knocked him out stone dead. The squirrel was hunched on a lower limb eating a pine cone. Needless to say the pellet passed threw and came out the opposite side at about the same place pictured. Now for the others!!! Kill!

I just stepped out in the yard to see if I could get a better or at least a different view of the pine tree next to the one I got the others from. Some went over to that tree when I killed this one. I haven't located them yet. However I saw one in a pine in the back yard. Back to battle! They are certainly active this morning. I wish my FLIR Scout 3 640 would hurry up and get here. 😂

Those neck and chest shots in front of the shoulder can dispatch them quickly. It may not be the exact spot you aimed for, but that’ll do ‘em. That’s a nice 49 yard shot. Seems they like eating from that tree. I’m not sure I remember if you told us, but which scope are you using on the Huben?

I use Element Helix scopes on all my PCPs. Because I sometimes shoot at longer distances (at least for me) I topped the Huben, Daystate Red Wolf HP & FX Maverick Sniper with the 6x24x50 scope. The Huben and Red Wolf HP have the FFP while the the FX Maverick Sniper is topped with the SFP. The Daystate Huntsman Revere is used mostly for close-medium distances (for me) & is topped with a 4x16x44 FFP. These Element scopes serve me well. I am a turret dialer & these scopes work flawlessly. They all have crisp discernible clicks and return to zero without fail. Now...if I can only hold the gun steady 😅.

It's been awhile. But I went out into the back yard this morning to do a quick recon. LOL the squirrels are so skittish that I had left my dog in the house. I was glassing the trees using my MTC Rapier Rangefinder and spotted a squirrel hunched up on an oak limb eating what I presumed was an acorn. I quickly ranged the squirrel to be at a distance of 54 yards. I stealthily went back into the house and got the Huben and Primos trigger sticks. Once I located the squirrel in the scope I could see it had dropped down on all four feet and was giving me the evil eye. It was a straight on shot between the eyes. With a loud thwack it blew the squirrel from it's perch on the limb. I could not see where it had fallen but was almost certain it was dead. I then let my dog out to retrieve it. When I examined the squirrel I could see the pellet had gone in between the eyes and traversed the body and came out close to rear leg. Thus it did massive internal damage.

This is the group of scrubby oaks and other hardwoods that the squirrel was in. I had been after this one for about two weeks but because of the thick canopy I could never get a shot. I knew the squirrel would make a fatal mistake at some point.

And...they just keep coming ...

Squirrel # 2 today.

I was watching TV and keeping an eye peeled out the sniper widow. I spotted a squirrel about half way up the pine tree. It was hunched on the limb giving a pine cone what far. I had the Maverick at the sniper window so I quickly dispatched him. This was a .22 Maverick Sniper with the 700 mm barrel. I was shooting a JSB 18.13 gr. Heavy at 924 fps. The squirrel was probably about 51 yards (far side of tree). I did not need to range him because I was familiar with the distance having shot multiple squirrels from this tree. I took the shot just behind the leg. Thwack and down he went. My dog has been getting a workout today. Time to go out and recon the yard again 😁. The squirrels are persistent for sure.

It's never ending! I had not seen a squirrel since about Christmas my last kill in '21 until a couple of days ago and then low and behold there are four of them running around chasing each other. I managed to kill one of them, two took off for parts unknown (good) but one has stuck around and really skittish but he or she will slip up one of these days. I got 121 last year and 146 the year before, I was hoping for a slow year this year but maybe not!

Same here. It took a few months to even start whittling them down. I began to see fewer. But the battle never ends. Now I may only get 1-2 squirrels a week from the yard instead of a half dozen or more. Then like you multiple squirrels will show up. LOL not much use to even look for them at my house today. Winds from 17-28 mph. They don't like that. But I can't stop looking!
