Squirrel hunting with Edgun R5m Long with Swag slugs + COYOTE ATTACKED

Ok well I decided to test out them new 23 gr nsa slugs ,well very accurate , I shot a dozen squirrels from 50 to 210 yards , and found they very good for squirrel sized game , and they buck wind great , It was almost too easy to hit them out past 100 yds ,very constant . ok so near end of day , I took off my PM2 scope , which is my 5x45 I had to send in for service , it had gotten grease on inner lens , they said they cleaned lens and recheck everything ,

I have to say the scope glass quality is among the best I ever looked threw , It looks so much better then when I had just sent it in , ok back to the hunting , so Titus and I skinned the squirrels , I get them started and I hand titus the tail and he pulls the skin off the squirrel as long as I dont let go of legs lol , , so we dumped it in yard came in to wash them up , and freeze them .

I then popped on my thermal scope and I had run out of the 23 grain slugs so , I decided to now test the Griffin 34 grain slugs , I did 1 shot zero at 50 yards , and then fired 2 shots to fine tune , I finished loading my mags and was filling my guns with air , when I hear coyotes howling , I was like where is titus ? I grab my gun and I am thinking titus is battleing to the death but no I see coyotes fighting over squirrel heads and guts , I left slider open and titus ran down stairs I knew I had to take shot before they ate him , So I aimed for heart of big one , i shoot I see him hit ground and I hear the loudest gut curling scream . he then stumbled and went 5 steps but yelped 2 more times , and fell over , I will go skin out and take pics in am as it has gotten dark now and < I know there is like way to many to go out there now.

To Be Continued

Not sure there are other veterinarians here....

Does look like mange from photos. Diagnosis easy if I was there.. .

And if it is mange, you as well as your dog could catch it. If you develop any red, itchy areas you should get yourself checked out as soon as possible and tell your physician about your potential contact.

Edit....did you directly touch that animal? Mange, a skin mite/parasite is transmitted from one infected animal to another by direct contact or contact with fomites (items contaminated with the mite) soon after the infected animal was present. So, this animal "caught" it from another aninal that had it. We see outbreaks in our area from time to time due to domestic animals contacting an infected fox, etc...

I noticed how clean the teeth were too.

I have a neighbor who walks their dog that looks like that. She said it wasn't contagious.

No way to know for sure what that Coyote had, but Mange was my first thought also...........

There are two main types of "mange" thus causing confusion. One is not technically contagious called demodectic mange (usually due to an animal with a compromised immune system of some sort). The other, sarcoptic mange, is caused by a skin mite and is highly contagious by contact with an infected animal.....

Hi Peskadot I updated gun picture , This is gun that I used and is still on my tripod it is r5m 22 long , the other gun is my r5 30 super long , that gun was my go to for coyotes , but The Rfm in 22 is more then capable with the proper slugs and tune to wack them out to 100 yards with a clean kill , I prefer 95% 5% with solid slugs 34 gr and up for coyotes , The griffin did very well being it was a hollow point

Perfect! Thanks for the knowledge. My neighbor said her dog was 16 years old with immune problems. Makes sense now.

My guess is it’s a combo poison and mange but guess on the poison part. My wife put down a fox with mange that been desperate to eat anything was trying to trap coons getting my chickens and it went after some kibble in a live trap. The coyotes ive popped growing up with mange looked like the crypted goat sucker. But none had a bloody anus. Could be a place where infection or a cancer had started. With out a test hard to know for sure. Good call on getting it gone with all the weird things popping up CWD and such. Stay safe man.
