Tough Squirrel Feeder

I've always built mine. A scrap piece of sheet metal in front does the trick. The following photo is before paint, and you can see the sheet metal there near the base. You can see some pock marks from pellet impacts:

Some old scraps of hardiboard are applied to the water-shedding surfaces and everything is sealed with roof tar. No water gets in. Here it is painted and hung up, open for business:

That's a very nice feeder and well thought out... 

Anyone ever used old "rubber belting" as a back stop? 

I found a large piece on the Hwy... it's about 18" wide x 6' long and about 3/8 thick. I would think it would be really good as a back stop and protect the feeder W/O making too much noise like steel. I keep forgetting to shoot it and see how it holds up.
