Springer

You'll probably get several responses suggesting limiting the power to something around 12 fpe because they are "easier to shoot", even though you asked specifically about something with power. I have a Diana 460 that provides plenty of power and is still quite accurate. There are certainly others that can provide similar energy levels and shoot well.

I will go out on a limb and suggest that the sweet spot for accuracy and power is around 15 ft-lb of energy. There are a number of guns in that category. At the top end you have the TX200, HW97, and Walther LGU. In the mid range there are the Diana/RWS 34 and HW95/R9.

For power of around 20 ft-lb of energy there are the Diana 460 in .22 mentioned above, the DianaRWS 48 and the fairly new Sig ASP20.

Of course for both categories there are many other options, but those mentioned are popular right now.

Accuracy means different things to different people. Some are delighted to be able to hit a quarter at 20 yards, others expect the same at 50 yards. Achieving the first objective with a springer can be done with a decent gun and scope plus a little practice. Consistantly tight groups at 50 yards takes a good gun and a lot of practice.

Power is often overrated. The 15 ft-lb of energy is plenty for typical airgun quarry, especially with a springer where practical accuracy limits hunting distances. Greater power does allow for flatter trajectories however, which is especially beneficial in .22 caliber.

I wouldn't shoot any coyote with a break barrel. If that's what you want it for then go into a different direction to deal with them.

Shooting a coyote with a break barrel would certainly "discourage" it from entering the area, as the OP inquired about.

So you encourage shooting coyotes with a break barrel for the sake of " discouraging " them ??

For the situation described by the OP, I would have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM WITH THAT.

So just coyotes "coming around " would warrant them being wounded with a airgun even though they haven't attacked a pet, killed your chickens, chased your child, etc: ? Your OK with that ?

Your embellishment, not mine. But in general to keep them away, yep. He did note it was a "problem". I suppose you would wait for it to kill something?

Yes he did ! He said he had a problem with coyotes " coming around " Take from that what you want.

Would I wait for it to kill something ! Depends if I had something to be killed. That was never established by the poster. If I did have pets and I wanted to deal with the situation quietly it wouldn't be with a break barrel airgun. A PCP in .30cal would be my choice. COMPRENDE ?

My stepson has two small dogs and he can't let them out in the fenced yard at night because the fence will keep the dogs in but not the coyotes out In my opinion I would be happy to wound a coyote so I would not have to dispose of the body or explain to the tree hugging neighbors why there is a dead coyote in my yard.

Thank you.

Then go with a powerful PCP putting out 60-80 ft/lbs if you want to silently kill it at night. If you want to wound it and have it yelp (ever heard a injured dog) near your home you will draw more attention to yourself wounding it than you would killing it quickly. Trust me, a break barrel airgun for coyotes is not exercising common sense.

"Comprende"? Arrogant a little? Live how you want, I'll do the same. Understand?????

No arrogance ! I just felt the need to address people making potential bad choices and dishing out bad advice.

Your OPINION on the entire question is worth less than nothing to me. And it was arrogant, and you know it. Just not big enough to admit it. COMPRENDE?

Oh boy, I sort of regret responding to this inquiry. To be clear, a pellet shot from even a high powered springer looses energy quickly with distance and may only be delivering 10 ft-lbs at the target. This is way below the energy of even a .22 lr, yet still enough to break skin and penetrate some distance in soft tissue.

Besides, the idea of maybe pulling off a double lung shot at close distance may backfire if you have the wrong kind of neighbors. So let's say you do that and the coyote crawls off to die in your neighbor's yard. What then? Does the neighbor call the police because they can see it has been shot? This kind of thing almost happened to me, but fortunately the neighbor just dropped off the possum that had been living in my shed on my doorstep. I don't know how he knew it was me, but he did.

I sympathize with your situation, but am not sure this is a good plan, even aside from the ethical issues.

He does not want to kill them ,he just wants them to go away! If they go away and die so be it. You would have to wound a coyote very severely for him to hang around and yelp! The yelping would not bother me at all.

Thank you.

Wayne

You doubt that a springer would create a wound categorized as " severe ". It won't have to hang around and yelp. It may linger depending upon how serious the wound. Even if it takes off yelping your neighbors will come out to find out what's going on. You may not care about the yelping but you did express concerns about the neighbors. Why would you worry about the neighbors seeing a dead coyote but express no concern about neighbors hearing a wounded animal coming from your yard ? That makes no sense to me ! The tree huggers you mention will call the cops on you as sure as I'm typing this if a screaming wounded animal comes out of your yard. Why not just get a Red Ryder BB gun and shoot it in the hinds to scare it off ? Save yourself some legal troubles and give it some thought.
