Springer Model and Power Level Discussion

I own 3 springers, each with different power levels. The HW30 is .177 & 6fpe, the .22 LGV is about 14-15fpe, and the .177 LGV is 12fpe.

I do want to get a couple* more springers in .177 and have come to really like the 12fpe tune of my LGV. So I figured I would get an HW50 & HW95 both in 12fpe .177. However that got me to think: Why? Is it really worth having two or more models with the same energy level? My idea is to have a lightweight hunter. I love the LGV, but it is kinda heavy and really love the HW30, so I wanted something in between. Light like the 30, with more power.

Keeping in mind that I do not really compete (yet) mostly hunt/pest, would I be better served by having say the 50 in sub 12fpe and the 95 in 12+? What are your thoughts on this?

I'm looking at the 22 cal HW 50 myself. I like the weight but would like to see a few more FPS (575 fps) to the plus side of (600 fps) from a JSB 18.13 pellet Not much just 30? 40? more. Would that be possible with a Vortec kit ya think?

PA tests this at around 11.5 FPE with 595 FPS with a 14.66. Your looking to get near 14.5 FPE. I'm with you on that. Interested to see responses.

I have always considered 12fpe my minimum for pesting. If I were you, I'd chose higher FPE. But, that's me..

For me it depends in distance and target pest. I have killed squirrels stone dead with my HW30 shooting Polymags at 16 yards. Right on the crown of the head. I shoot chipmunks as well at 10-15 yards, even 22 yards or so will kill them dead with the 30.

However, my question isn’t really which power level to choose, but rather is it worth having two different model rifles with the same power level. Regardless of under or over 12fpe.

I guess you may be able to tune it to more power, not sure. I would wonder how much accuracy would be affected in a lighter weight rifle. Which figures into my general inquiry.

My .177 LGV wasn’t as much fun to shoot as it is now with sub 12fpe tune. It always was accurate, but was perhaps bit too harsh. It also has 0 problems taking squirrels even with a shot to the vitals.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm an idiot. Right now I'm in Disney and drinking, so sorry about not understanding!!!

And, in that light, yes. I'd be perfectly happy with 2 different model rifles at the same power level.

And almost all my pesting is 25 yards plus.

G’day money bags, I to have been looking at the 50. It’s lighter then the 95 and less expensive, at least in my country anyway. The 50 as you would have probably investigated is lower on power then the 95 but will do the job you are describing. Giles did a YouTube review on the 95L, have a look at it. Nice bit of kit as he would say. If I do get the 50 I would buy the 22 cal, more fp but I know you like the flatter trajectories of the 177’s.

Looking foward to seeing if you fork out for both or just one. More shifts I think are coming up👍

Ha! Money 💰 I wish! But I will budget and eventually get them. The particular models of each I’m interested in cost almost the same here. But come loaded, to include a pretty nice scope.

Would actually like to get one in .20, but not available that I know of, and then there’s the lack of pellet selection.

Come January I’m definitely picking up extra shifts at work, can’t do it now, wife’s in school and needs me around as much as possible.

I have both a HW 50 and HW 95. The HW 50 has a Maccari kit installed and produces 11.53 ft lbs with FTT 14.66 pellets. The HW 95 does 13.93 ft lbs with the 14.66s and14.73 with JSB 18.13s.

The HW 50 is a Laser and is great for tree rats at 20 to 30 yds. However,.last week I had two raccoons in my yard. My HW 50 was the closest gun. The smaller one went down with a shot between the eyes and did the death dance for about 20 seconds. I shot the larger one, a real brute, behind the ear.He fell over got up shook his head and staggered off. The smaller coon then lifted up his head. One more shot finished him off. All this at about 25 yds..So, I suppose the 50 is a little under powered for raccoons.

I hope this helps.

I think I am happy with my .22 Walther for the time being. Would like to master it before considering any more .22s. However, for some reason I really like the .177s and will likely pick up a couple more in the near future. Based on most of the input and research I have been doing, I think I will pick up an HW50 in sub 12 and an HW95 in FAC.

I had once the opportunity to pick up a very nice 95 in .20 and I let it get away, I kinda regret that now and wish I would have picked it up.

if it was not for the willingness to have multiple guns of the same power level, our British shooting friends would not not be manufacturing near as many fine riffles as they do for there home market. Power is only one factor of the enjoyment of a fine rifle. I have a few that are around the same power level and yet each one is very different and is a pleasure each in its own way.

But they I got over feeling like I have to rationalize every gun I have. Many are just because I want it.
