Way back in the day I watched an old guy take his foot and put it on a rattlers head and cut it off with a pocketknife when we crossed this snake at the entrance to an old mine shaft in the winter. It was like in suspended animation is was so slow. He was a hard core prospector and laughed when he said that sometimes he just cut off their rattle so if anybody came snooping around his claims they wouldn't hear it coming.
