Sort? Lube? Weigh my pellets...Nah...just bite ME!

Well said, intensity22. In the testing I've done, I've gotten the same results. Recovered pellets I've shot straight from the tin with deformed skirts have looked and measured the same as undamaged ones. Going through polygonal or STX barrels(or any barrel with a choke), slightly re-forms/re-shapes the head and skirts, so they all come out looking/measuring very close to the same.

Same here. Vast majority of my shooting is hunting. I'm NOT taking the time to wash, sort, weigh, etc. With the Original Smooth Twist barrels on both my guns (Royale 500 & Boss) the difference between a deformed pellet & one that's not is negligible. If I aim at a squirrel's head at 60 yards I'll get em in the head! Maybe not the ear hole every time but in the HEAD. Good enough for me. IF I were ever to get into competition shooting that 1/8 or 1/16 of an inch difference MIGHT be worth the extra work but it's just not for me now. I find deformed skirts in just about every tin of pellets & have absolutely no qualms about using them. Thanks for the vid!

Interesting results.

I was watching your video while sitting at my shooting bench and thought what the hell I should give this a try.

.25 cal 380mm Superior liner shooting 25.4gr @ 860fps from my Crown.

My results at 50yds we’re still minute of squirrel but definitely opened up a bit.

@intenseaty22 sent me his video and I watched yesterday. My basic opinion is this which was before his video. My view is, that if you spend $1000-$2000 on a rifle for plinking, hunting, pesting (pesting and hunting to me aren't same thing), and it isn't shooting straight then something is wrong with the gun.

Plus I know crap happens, but if the dealer or manufacture told me to just sort, lube, and weigh your pellets to get my brand new and extremely expensive gun to shoot accurately, I would say "no either refund my money or get me a new gun, or a free replacement barrel etc."

It is that flier that cripples the critter or looses the match. Good simple proof attention to pellets does improve groups.

I don't weigh, sort or lube pellets. I do know what head size each rifle prefers and when a half minute matters I size them. I always check the skirts because bent skirts WILL throw more fliers than round ones.

On support of that point. intensitie's 7 o'clock flier WAS one of the bent skirts...

If it is accurate enough for you then it is accurate enough. It's about the shooter and what he needs to get the task done.

Nice comparison. That certainly looks like a significant difference to me. As others have noted, it probably depends on the individual and how accurate that particular shooter and gun can be as to whether this amount of change would cause a miss. I would certainly prefer the first group to the second.

I wanted to make a couple points here.

I’m not disputing the advantages of washing, sorting, etc. if optimal accuracy at greater distances is needed, I may do it as well.

I shoot 40 yards max, not by choice, so doing that is a waste of time for me. The squirrels can’t tell the difference.

It was a fun project, I like to challenge the status quo, & it makes a point. Although a bit late, it was partially in response to the many folks who told me to make sure and sort pellets when I was going through my FX Wildcat nightmare. Slightly deformed pellets don’t bother me. No one goes around crimping their ammo on purpose. This was an extreme example.

@srtmat That’s actually phenomenal at 50 yards. If the Wildcat had performed like that at even 25 yards it would have been a keeper. Was just too unreliable & finicky.

You surely did everything you possibly could to make that WC shoot well! Like you I’m sure most folks know something is amiss when a PCP is just not accurate for whatever reason. One of my scopes zero stop was walking so my POI was shifting, I thought it was me as I KNEW it was not the rifle..whew...thank goodness I checked the zero stop which was defective! And, I too shoot str8 from the tin and if a pellets skirt is deformed to the extent your pliers did, I just use my pellet sizer to re-round the skirt which is a rare occurrence....nice observation and write up.
