Events Socal AGN Fun shoot report

Socal AGN fun shoot and humiliation avalanche. Derrick called Thursday night and said the semi-annual get together is on for this Saturday. Get the word out. We all met at the assigned spot Sat morning. I was really worried because there had been an undercurrent of bile floating in the electronic whispers.

It all started really smoothly and thank goodness for the two women who must have held back some of the more vociferous participants. Nick Nielsen’s wife, Jessica, and Derrick’s wife, Evalinda, were most important. Evalinda was wearing a plastic cast on her right foot and Derrick was so meek and reserved. I wanted to know the story behind that!

But I digress, sorry. I got there and Gerry Reba was waiting out front and followed me in. Next were Mike Bricker, Russ Cronk, Mike Hearne, the Nielsen’s, Nick and Jessica, Rob Wild, and Derrick and Evalinda Mason.

Nick Nielsen and his wife lay a box full of NSA slugs on the table with a smile and, “come and get em!” Boy o’ boy, the fun began in earnest. There was no pushing or shoving but only because the girls passed out several doses of stink eye. Girls are great!

We had three really good shooters and a couple of sleepers. All kinds of targets were up from 50 yards out to over 100. Paintballs on golf tees, steel spinners, regular 3” shoot n’ see’s everywhere. God forbid a squirrel runs out. Play day at war practice.

The guns were Edgun 25 magnum, FX Streamline, FX Boss, FX Crown, Brocock Bantam, AAS410 TDR, Ed gun Leyla 22, 25, Daystate Pulsar, Daystate 20 + year old FT custom (A MOST Beautiful) gun with everything sparkling. It was Rob’s and I wanted it, plus a Vulcan .30 and more that I cannot remember.

Mike Hearne was shooting his Crown but had to show off the picture of his new Continuum Yellow jacket. He is having the air tube dipped to match the Yellow jacket stock. Of course he knew I wanted one really bad so he kept shoving the phone in my face saying look look look! I wanted to tell him to go get dipped! But later I figured he was just an overage KID with a new toy showing Daddy and trying to get attention. I’m jealous. Damn kids….

Gerry Reba had his monster FX Boss .30 and proceeded to literally crucify every steel target no matter what distance. I hate that damn gun.. He takes it mouse hunting when we go and it makes such a mess. Jeez Gerry, get a grip, grow up. I bet you smoke monkey hair when playing your drums. (He goes to the recording studio tomorrow) Hope you hit it big so you can buy a rifle instead of the Emulsifier you have now.

Russ Cronk is legendary as a shooter, tuner, and air gun guru of the highest order. He’s a prizewinner in every category. There were some very interesting tidbits that I gleaned from his conversation. Now Russ is not nearly as old as myself, but he is changing in his approach to air gunning and enjoyment. He has evolved from rabid technician, shooter, and competitor into a much wizened pleasure seeking, simple to use, works every time, uncomplicated shooter. Living in Big Bear he has great temp changes daily and lots of his guns swing wildly because of that. He loves the little Ed gun Lelya. He can count on it for first shot dead on zero every time, any time, and, in any weather, always deadly accurate. Remember, he is a champion shooter with years of experience.

Then we have Mike Bricker and he is a force to be reckoned with. He is presently working on a .25 Edgun magnum. It really is a shooter. Going to be scary accurate but so is the Vulcan .30. Mike likes those Eastern European guns and they are so frigging tough. Solid works of quality. Mike as working on an absolute bell ringer of a 50 yard group four shots one large hole group with 26.8 grain .25 cal slugs. Shoot number 5!

Well he is now only going to shoot four shot groups and brag about them…

Overhearing conversation between Mike, Russ and Derrick (who is probably the very best offhand shooter I know), they all heaped praise on the Daystate products as being the very finest engineered quality guns built, then whispers of some very big surprises after the first of the year. Derrick shoots his Pulsar like Russ shoots his Leyla.

A fly on the wall hears all!

So what did we shoot and how… who cares. We killed dozens of paint balls, hundreds of $5.00 golf tees, so many shoot and see’s. Carnage and horrors everywhere.

Thanks for posting Nick. You crack me up! Had a blast yesterday. What a great "community " we AGN guys have. Everyone so freely giving of their time, knowledge & experience. When Nick plopped down that box of slugs it was the 1st time I regretted (sort of) not having a gun that can shoot them. Then he plopped down that bag of beef jerky. That didn't shoot well out of my gun either! I'll try Turkey jerky. "A pleasant time was had by all!"

Ha! I know it’s all in good fun. I actually was going to walk away from my test group with the .25 Eddy Super Magnum after 4 shots at 50 yards same hole, shooting the NSA 26.8 grain HP DB at 1040 FPS. Then Nick gave me such a blast (because I’ve done it to everyone on here that shoots less than 5 shot “groups”) that I came back and shot two more through the same hole... I shot the same gun and slugs today in the wind in Descanso, CA and hit a 3/4 inch spinner 5 shots in a row at 76 yards. The gun still needs a little work and tuning but it’s looking like it’ll be my primary slug gun. It got its first ground squirrel today at 198 yards. Cool thing is that the slug has more FPE at 200 yards than my .22 Cricket mini Carbine at the muzzle...

As always it is just so much fun hooking up with good friends especially when they shoot their guns what a perfect day we had to go shooting had some interesting guns there I was sure glad to see Mike find a slug that would work well in his gun I thought he was going to give up but he finally found one that works so good I think we may have a convert here also the guy next to me was shooting the FX boss sometimes we forget how well those old FX royals shoot also with Derrik shooting offhand he does well hard to beat always fun to try and as always Centercut shows up and is at the top of his game always fun to shoot to get somebody that’s better than you

Mike is that the Eddy R5 long I had and sold to Derrick?

Yes, it certainly is, R5 Super Magnum... I traded an R5M Long for it, and Derrick tuned it a bit to shoot the 33.5 grain NSA at 935 to 940 FPS. Right now its a little "hot" for the 26.8 grain NSA HP DB slugs that shoot the most accurate from it (1040 FPS). So I need to bump the reg. down a bit, then tune for a plateau of around 1025 to 1030, and adjust HST for right at 1000 FPS.

I polished the cocking mechanism yesterday, its not "butter smooth', but its better than it was. It still cocks pretty hard, but lowering the HST tension so I can shoot the 26.8 grain slugs a little slower (990 to 1000 FPS) should help that. I'll bump the reg. pressure down from 135 to between 125 and 130 bar. I've cleaned the barrel but haven't polished it yet with JB Bore Paste. That'll be good for slugs since the barrels lead up pretty quick shooting slugs compared to pellets.

As it is before mods I think it should shoot close to MOA at 100 yards, but have only shot it at 76 yards, plus of course the 198 yard ground squirrel. I am pretty sure it'll shoot inside an MOA at 100 yards in a couple of weeks when I'm done with it. I got it for long range hunting and the small bore slug challenge at RMAC 2020. More to follow...

I also bought the used .30 Vulcan2 Tactic and had that at the fun shoot. Its very accurate, and easy to shoot fast, but only gets 20 shots per fill, even with the speed lowered to around 860 FPS. I'm going to install a power plenum in the pressure tube, and hopefully turn down the reg. pressure and get at least 3 mags (27 shots) per 250 bar fill. I got this also for the RMAC PRC and Speed Challenges. I used my .22 Cricket mini last year and with all the wind there I felt like I had brought a knife to a gun fight...

Thanks for the info Mike. That's awesome that you found a slug that it likes. Love to hear success stories from guns that I've had even if I only had a it a week or two! LOL Maybe I'll get into slugs one of these years?

I did some serious horse trading and selling with the Wolverine and Eddy this summer to get my Boss and .25 Royale. Loving them so far!

Not sure how I missed this fabulous write up by Nick, but I hadda ask CenterCut if there was a write up at all....I looked for it honestly.

Nick, if you weren't a writer in your lifetime, you definitely should have been. Your way with words is exceptional....AND FUNNY! Thank you for the write up!

It was fun to meet everyone and get to see some of the guns that are out there in action.

Nick and wife Jess, what a true pleasure to meet you, and your kindness in providing slugs was over the top, then to pile jerky on top, holy cow!!

Enjoyable day with good peeps doing the same thing that I do all the time. How can it get any better?

Thanks for a cool day everyone!
