Yours likes .218's? . . . you also have a bunch of .217's that yours didn't like when you first started testing to figure out what it likes to eat?
Wanna trade?? {sigh}
I could have sworn that this new barrel I put into my Taipan was gonna dig the .218's as they (speedwise) seem to come out of the barrel faster when shot across my chrony yet -- I cannot get them to shoot consistently / accurate / group worth a damn. So far - with available ammo on hand - light .217's - h&n and nsa's - 20 and 23 grains have proven to be hands down dead on - the 23 NSA's in particular are ridiculously good.
I ordered up 3 tins of H&N 27's ( .218's ) from PA that showed up today. I got the 4th tin for free - buy 3 get 4th deal ... most of you know this I'm guessing. I'm just back to the house after testing these and ... frustrating to say the least. I tried them from 890 up through 990 speeds and going through lots of air in the process - I may as well have been shooting a shotgun. {sigh}
For what it's worth - gun is a Taipan Veteran Long with a new 700mm CZ barrel and power plenum. It was dead accurate in it's default build with the LW barrel and no plenum with the .217 23g H&N's. Interestingly that barrel didn't like the 23g NSA's. This new one is the opposite - it LOVES the NSA's @921 and is quite good with the H&N's @948. Why the same weight slug needs to travel at two different speeds is beyond me but . . . whatever. Cutting to the chase - the principal reason for the longer barrel and plenum is to be able to shoot heavier slugs - in theory better at +100 yards, bucking the wind, hits harder on critters, etc . . . . I've got more test batches coming in tomorrow according to usps DOT com - some .2175 and .218 nsa's. We'll see.
So -- I've got 3 unopened tin's of H&N .218 27g slugs plus one that has been opened and is probably 40-50% used. I've still got the cardboard and the cool foam packaging that PA uses when they pack and ship ammo. What have ya got in .217 that is comparable? Let's make a deal / trade!
( I'm actually kind of wondering if this long barrel is 'flexing' or 'moving' with the heavier .27's as it is quite long and sticks out quite a ways from the scope rail where it is clamped . . . . )
