So what do we hear from the .25 Gauntlet owners?

Well, Southern Gunner did a pretty thorough "No BS" review of the new .25

From what He showed, I am impressed. The best pellet for His particular rifle at 40 yds was the Predator Polymag. Just one Small hole barely bigger than the pellet! Being a hunting gun..That! Is some kind of wonderful!

Apparently the trigger has been refined (?) and it now has a barrel band.

I can see one in my future. With a little tweakin (What kind of airgunner would do That?!?) this thing could be a Hammer! ...sounds like a good time to me.

I have one but I haven't had a chance to do much shooting with it. I did run a magazine over the chrony and got 950-915 fps and it's one hole at 35 yards. The trigger feels a little better than the 177 and 22 did at the time I got. I'm waiting for a 23ci bottle from China. When it arrives, I will play with the trigger while I have it degassed. If you need a great hunter even if you have the budget to get something with a higher cost, you really can't beat this gun.

Mine arrived with the reg set at 1700psi, shooting jab 25.39 around 850fps. Barrel port was badly misaligned..

I bought it as a parts donor for a big plenum, carbon bottled Qb78 based build. I corrected the barrel port misalignment and now the .25 upper is sitting on top of a 70cc plenum reg"d at 2200psi pushing just under 70fpe.

I put an old Archer qb78 .22 repeater upper on the Gauntlet .25 lower. after a bunch of tuning,, shooting jsb redesigned monster 25.gr, it does 45 shots averaging 860fps, right at 42fpe. This is with the OEM 13ci bottle and 1700psi reg setting.

With a relatively small plenum the Gauntlet .25 isn't really setup for high power and lots of shots....

As stated above, I purchased a .25 Gauntlet to use as a parts donor for another project, which is documented in this thread:

https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=151497.msg15567896#msg15567896"]https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=151497.msg15567896#msg15567896]https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=151497.msg15567896#msg15567896

The short of it is this was a QB78 with 70cc plenum, 350cc bottle, and 2200psi reg setting. With the Gauntlet .25 upper it achieved just under 70fpe, Shot count should be somewhere in the 75+ range based on getting 22 shots from 2600-2100psi. It has a 4500psi carbon bottle.

Then I took the .25 Gauntlet lower and converted it to .22 using a qb78 repeater kit. That testing is documented here;

https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=152309.0"]https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=152309.0]https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=152309.0

The short of this build was it ended up with every tuning trick i know----peek poppet, peek hammer, SSG, COBRA valve, and a bit of porting. 45 shots at 42FPE. Not bad for a 21.5" barreled .22 and a 13ci tank.

Then I realized since these guns were converted to crosman style rear breech retention (2 screws, an upper and a lower vs the single lower Gauntlet screw), I could easily swap the Gauntlet .25 upper back to the mod'ed Gauntlet .25 lower. 2 screws is all that is required. So I moved the .25 upper back and restored the .25 Gauntlet, well not quite. i left it in a cut down QB78 stock. I don't really care for the Gauntlet stock......

Here she is. The stock is far from finished, but you get the idea.

I made ZERO adjustments, i simply removed the .22 upper and replaced it with the .25. Same HST, again, zero adjustments.

Here is what going from a 21.5" .22 caliber barrel to a 23.5" .25 caliber barrel does. 40 shots averaging 941fps with JSB 25.39

There is room for further tuning. The reg is still at 1700psi, as it was delivered by Umarex. I guessed on the Cobra Chamber size and jet. Barrel port is at .185. SSG gap is almost 3/16". But I am quite pleased at progress so far.

Mike

He just released another video. He has his gauntlet shooting 55 shots at 67 fpe now. Added bigger tank and new reg.

That's crazy----a big bottle and 2400psi reg. I'm running the 13ci bottle, but I do have a 350cc carbon bottle/reg that I could swap to.

I did some tethered testing today, mainly searching for a lower powered tune. But while I was at it I decided to see where I maxed out. I was only comfortable going up to 2100 psi. With preload maxed I only got up to 895fps with JSB 33.95. Bear in mind this is with an ultralight 15gram hammer, the gun isn't set up for max power.

For now I like the 40 shots just under 50fpe with the 13ci bottle.

Mine came with the reg at 1700 psi shooting Air Arms Diabolo fields at 850 fps. The air stripper was cracked, as it was on my .22 version, and the o-ring on the air stripper was way too small so I had to swap it out. The bottle was too lose and after tightening it I had to realign the the reg and foster. I haven't got too far into pellet testing but so far it seems to shoot most everything I've put in it pretty well out to 35 yards. From what I'm seeing on youtube these guns are kind of all over the place as far as reg pressures and pellet preferences. But it is early and with more time and data I'm sure we'll see a trend develope.

The .25 gauntlet is a tinkerers dream, but for someone wanting top tier performance / quality / features, I'd say its not a rifle for you. I personally dislike bottle guns so thats a no go for me, I don't care for 43"+ rifle lengths. But if you as a shooter don't mind those two things, and don't mind getting a little dirty, then the gauntlet is right up your alley.

Mackeral, I've seen websites state 28.5" barrel and others say 23.5". Can you confirm which? Either one is another bonus for the gauntlet, its not common to get long barrels with cheap rifles. This means more power potential! A well tuned gauntlet at 2k psi with the 23.5" barrel should have no issues making 65+ fpe with 33.95's when ported to 90% bore. Swap a bigger bottle and you're looking at lots of power and good shot counts. Not bad for 200$ and change if I say so myself.

Where do you find these for $215?

I think that was a sale price. Standard price is 299$~ I believe...for this price I would look at a Nova Vista Liberty. Probably the best 300$ offering for pcp's right now in my humble opinion.

Correct, it was a preorder price with coupon code from Sportsmans Guide. Some got it for less than $200. I'm sure the Liberty is a great gun as well. its hard to compare the two--bottle vs. tube, sidelever vs. bolt, etc. I love a sidelever and likely will not make any future purchases that are not sidelever. Bottles are cool for long shot strings at higher FPE. I'm sure someone will eventually stick a bottle on their Liberty.

The most recent tune for my .25 Gauntlet......

I added a 350cc bottle with the reg set at 1900psi. its a 4500 bottle but I've only done a string on a 3500psi fill so far. It eats up a lot of nitrogen and ammo, lol. Shooting JSB 33.95gr I am seeing 62 shots averaging 875fps with a nice ES of 15. On a full fill it should get around a little over 90 shots. Not too bad at 57fpe. It will go as high as 66fpe but shot count suffers.....

I agree 100% with your assessment of the Gauntlet. it is a big long gun. It needs some work to get decent shot count. But it is easy to work on and Umarex solved a some of the long standing QB78 design challenges--for example the transfer port is now more of a crosman style. It makes assembly and realignment a lot easier than with the QB platform. They also changed to a 2mm valve stem, which helps with increasing port area without increasing hammer strike.

Barrel length from muzzle to port is 23.5". The 28.5 measurement is a strange measurement----it is the distance from the mag end of the barrel/breech out to the end of the shroud.

I didn't alter valve seat diameter during this phase, but I did open the throat to .220". Combined with the 2mm stem this supports the rest of the guns .200 porting. Later I'm sure I won't be able to resist the urge to go bigger......But as it is already well over 2fpe/cc of plenum more power is going to come at a greater expense of shot count....I do have a 500cc carbon bottle en-route......
