smooth twist vs smooth twist-X accuracy?

"Glem.Chally"
"CHUCK"Another way of looking at this would be to take a normal smooth twist Barrel and just go ahead and press the rifling into the entire length of a smooth twist barrel and viola! You would have a smooth twist barrel with rifling that runs the entire length that would fit on every FX rifle ever made! And ones like this could be made with Different Twist rates to shoot the longest pellets or slugs or whatever ! Instead of this stupid sleeve with these stupid liners for god sakes! Whoever came up with this stupid idea of a barrel sleeve with interchangeable liners for God sake?
Not looking to start an argument here but just some observations, nothing has changed as far as I know from the beginning of advertising. (other than the wait time) Yes they announced it too early, past the point of watering mouths.
Want to change calibers, you need a caliber specific pellet probe and complete barrel assembly because of the inlet. 400$ or whatever This is the same as the impact, no big shocker there.
Want to keep the same caliber but change twist rates? That's cheaper because you only need the liner that threads into your existing breech side of the inlet. 150 or so.
Why can't they just take a smooth twist and do that the length of the barrel? Well because they cut the barrel WAY down in thickness to do the process, I don't know about you but I don't want an 1/8th inch thick unsupported barrel.
Why can't they just make one barrel that fits all guns? The same reason you can't put a Boss barrel on a Royale, different breech diameters because certain platforms have the option of .30 and most do not. So not one barrel to rule them all.
This is new technology, yeah it's not coming as fast as we all would like but being able to have 3 twist rates for the same caliber for 300$ more than the cost of the gun is game changing. I think it's a wise move other than announcing it too early.
I was writing my post, and in the meantime you posted yours... : )

What you are saying makes sense, somewhat, and it doesn't. I mean, if they do it the way you describe it, so be it, but that would be just stupid. Why would you not keep all the "outer parts" (shroud and barrel) the same, and just change the inner part. Design a barrel in the biggest caliber, then just make the liner smaller and smaller, No big deal. I guess.

"CHUCK"And by the way a barrel doesn't have to be an eighth of an inch thick to have rifling inside its full length... People make hammer forged barrels with rifling their full length every day of the week... It's just a different type of rifling. So I see no reason why that smooth spiral could not be imparted using a hammer forging process instead of a twisting process.
Yeah that's a good point, it is somewhat similar I guess however on the smooth twist the rifling is pressed on from the outside (requiring a thinner diameter). Hammer forging is pressing a mandrel into the barrel then pounding the outside to force it to mimic the mandrel. They would have to change everything to do it to a full thickness barrel.

And yes I understand you're pissed off at FX haha.

If they did it that way you would be loading a pellet into the liner that also has the transfer port, they would have to cut multiple o-ring grooves in the liner as well. Each simple solution comes with it's own problems.

The weight of the barrel would also have to be supported by the liner, the liner would also need to be way thicker at the breech end to fit all the steps in the block.

Here on the right, that's what a ST barrel threads into its brass so it's both easy to machine and soft for the probe. It has the caliber specific sized transfer port, caliber specific bore has an inner o-ring groove cut for the pellet probe to seal when inserted as well as the outer 0-ring for the breech. My point was if you just make the liner do everything it's going to cost more as it takes much more work to make.

It is quite simple once you get your hands on one. The outer barrel sleeve is the only common part. It’s not worth the fluffing about to change the other bits. Long term I’m sure FX will make new rifles compatible with the ST-x barrels.
As for it not being a success they simply can’t manufacture guns and barrels fast enough. Impact production is only just starting to keep up with demand after 2 years and a good percentage of those owners can’t wait to get the new barrel system. The first shipment of ST-x barrels into the States where gone in less than a week. If FX can now come up with inners that can be shown to shoot longer heavier pellets and slugs then ST-x owners will be lining up for those too.
I doubt any other airgun manufacturer in the world is growing there market share anything like FX.

In response to fx x barrel I somehow managed to win the sportsman class this last year. I have had impact regular smooth twist that I was planning to use, but developed a leak after I pulled the trigger with the bolt open....duh! With two weeks before EBR I got lucky and got a .30 crown in walnut. I practiced everyday until EBR and learned what the gun likes. I noticed it likes lower velocity’s and if I stayed there it was a smidge better than OG smooth twist. Which is saying a heck of a lot! With stock barrel liner it liked the jen 44’s more than the 50’s so that was my choice. I was looking admit I did not like the x barrel as it was presented on all the videos. I thought the liner was too thin and would flex under pressure. Well the proof is in the pudding I guess! This is a crazy accurate rifle! And does out shoot my impact regular smooth twist (slightly), but that’s what EBR is all about...splitting hairs! I now have ordered the impact .700mm and am interested in what I get from it. At the end of the day though EBR is going to be won by a great shooter with a good rifle! If you look at 10th place in sport class that was my brother with a Kalibre gun Cricket.25 who was so in first place after two 75 yard relays. Ahead of me by four points. He had an issue with his scope on the final and ended up tenth place. Still a very good performance by a great shooter with a very good gun. Fx in my opinion is the best, and Fx X barrels are the golden token, but if he did not have scope issues it would have been interesting to say the least! Study your wind and check your equipment. Most of all, every shot you take make sure you are on your target and not the guys next to you! It is really easy to make this mistake at high magnification....oh and just a note here, may dad who is a 30 year retired Marine will be there this year and is amazing! I can not outshoot him! So hopefully if he does well you can all give him a big “good to meet you” to the Sargent Major! 3 tours of Vietnam kinda helps your accuracy! He is my Hero ;)

Congrats Keith. It’s to the Pro class with you this year - good news to all of of us in Sportsman class! Well, your brother and Dad, so no slack there...
I’ve wondered the same things about the X barrel with regards to stiffness. I’ve read on AGN about a Crown .22 owner that had inexplicable barrel droop and couldn’t explain it except that the barrel wasn’t as stiff as was expected. But again, like you said, it’s hard to argue with success.

Well thank you guys! I do think I got a bit lucky with EBR last year . It’s really who is having a good day I think. I will stick with smooth twist x this year, and will let you know how the .700 mm x barrel does in my impact. I ordered it in .25 and my crown is in .30. It does seem the x barrel likes lower velocities around 840 or so, but that’s the .30. Maybe a tighter spin rate for us who like to shoot at 900 FPS or so. We are all still waiting on liners though. Thanks so much for the positive feedback on the Seargent Major and the “hearty salutes” He is the Humble Marine with a decorated history. Can’t wait for everyone to meet him. Also he taught me at a very young age how to shoot! Respect and gratitude:)

Hello all
i agree totally, stx barrel are very very good,
from a little more than a week now i own a .30 stx 700 mm on my impact and accuracy at long range are fabulous.
my last shooting session was to 128 m and my target is some .22 impact all my shot goes litterally where my scope look

if i can access to the target i take some pics
thank you

Thierry

I don't think so. One of the big selling points for the X barrel system is price. I believe it is around $150, but I am not sure. The Impact is different because it needs both, the inner and outer barrel... Thanks, Kmd

Seriously? Someone called me an idiot for my above post. Great. You can call me what ever you want. What I don't understand though is, why doing so anonymously? Why not do so publicly? Seriously? Makes ZERO sense to me. Are you guys afraid that your fellow air gunner wont like you anymore?
