Slugs for R5M Matador .25 Standard

Just jumping in as I’ll have a .25 EDgun soon. I’ll be shooting mostly 34.95 JSB I & MKII though Rat Sniper 31.4 (I believe that’s the grain weight) RBT are supposed to be very good.

Ill be looking for the highest BC I can find from the 28” LW barrel in .25 that’s on a platform developed to handle .30’s with ease. I have a lot of room to go from light pellets to heavy slugs though I really would like to know instead of testing a ton myself.

My old AAA Condor.25 could send 70 grain slugs quite well out to the 225 yards I tried it to. This set up will cover a lot of things for me. I think I’ll only be limited by the loading port length & see what 1:16 can handle. I suspect quite heavy as even my 1:18 Sumatra sends 50 grain .25’s with awesome accuracy. 1/4” @ 50 yards.

let us know what you’re R5 likes. I’m getting the Supermagnum R5. Single shot, what I like anyway.

@JamesD. My R5 Matador.30 Standard loves the 47 grain NSA slugs it actually shots them just as good as the 44.75 grain Jsbs and it also shots the poly mags good as well...in fact i shoot nothing but NSA slugs out of my R5 Matador..."WARNING" they hit hard as hell and the impact is Ridiculously loud... sounds like a firecracker when it its..NO BULLpoopIN...i ordered some Rat sniper slugs but they guy who makes them is super slow....i ordered them 2 months ago and still havent gotten then yet...he actually stopped taking orders until he Catches up with all the back orders....My .25 R5M Matador Standard will be here tomorrow from Edgun West...i have some .25 NSA slugs and Some Varmit knockers to test out....I'll make a video and post it on my YouTube to give ppl a petty good idea as to what will work and what wont....

Lots of good info from all. The difference between my old 23.75” LW .25 on a AAA Condor & this 28” LW .25 on the EDgun R5 Supermagnum built for .30 but barreled in .25 has my hopes up.

I don’t know enough about ballistics but one big thing that will help me out is knowing maximum length of slugs that’ll fit in the single shot loading port. That’ll tell me how heavy I can go. I’m also curious if the extra 4.25” of twist will make any big difference. It’s definitely more efficient.

I’m probably going to be leaning somewhere between 25-60 grain slugs with the highest BC I can get without going lower than a 20 shot string & no more than a 20 FPS spread, ideally 10 FPS or less.

I spoke with Brian from edgun west on this topic. He said the R5M chamber is not cut for slugs. He also let me know that the only slug he knew of that might fit was the H&N Grizzly. I tried them and can confirm that, with some extra effort they fit in my chamber. I can't speak to the accuracy of the Grizzlies yet, just that they fit my R5M. I tried some Nielson's in 34.7 HP-DB. I didn't feel like it was a good idea and didn't force it. It came up against a wall as soon as it touched the chamber. Much like I might expect after speaking with the dealer. That was a bit ago. I haven't had it more than a couple months I'd say. I know things are changing fast in the slug world, so I'm staying tuned for sure.

Yeah, Brian says grooves .251 & lands .246” so I may rebarrel it with a no choke custom & have my gunsmith buddy set it all up. He’s got everything he’d need & knows a heck of a lot more than I.

I’ll definitely try the 34.95’s & MKII’s but if the Rat Snipers coming with it don’t work well, I might settle & wait. I’m pretty sure a real .257 monster will be available soon enough.

I just saw an exciting video on youtube about the possibility of Russian made unchoked barrels being sent our way. No certain date, but it was from the Edgun mfg. I'm interested. I was toying with the idea of putting together a slug barrel myself. Perhaps perverting an fx barrel. Trying a drop in barrel would be so much easier. Then perhaps we can get on with the finding out what slugs are good in this gun.
