Slugs barrels help me out?

He means backing off a click in the hammer spring.

Well, basically you don't want absolute max velocity for a given pressure, as that will likely mean some air is being wasted behind the pellet/slug as he says.

So in order to get rid if this wasted air, you back off the hammer spring tension until you see a drop in velocity as he described.

Basically.

No problem.

I just put a tune on mine based upon what he said in that video.

Got 945 for a peak velocity at 122bar. Went two clicks down to identify a clear drop in velocity. Then closed the valve a bit over 1 turn to tighten the Extreme Spread to 6 and ended up with 928fps average.

I'm hoping to get to the range this morning and shoot a few groups between periods of rain to check for accuracy.

Does anyone know what Matt means by backing off a click from max when talking about adjusting hammer spring to high reg pressure? Is he talking about backing off one click on the power wheel like Max down to A or 5, or adjust the HST one half turn less on the screw?

For any given regulator pressure there is an optimum tension of the hammer spring. Too little tension and the valve won't open completely and you will lose power on the first few shots, some people confuse this with regulator creep. Too much tension and you will waste air without actually gaining any power.

rsterne explained how you can find the optimum tension of the HS in this post.. http://airgunguild.com/ask-bob/tuning-a-regulated-pcp/ I think this is what Matt was referring to.

Hope you find this useful, it was eyeopening when I learned this thing.

Yes I learned about this about a year ago and found the regulator sweet spot for harmonics and balanced my hammer to that reg pressure. I actually learned it from Matt's Get the Most form your Impact video about harmonics so was curious to try what Matt suggested in his newest video ie backing off a bit to diminish excess air at the crown of the barrel. I wasn't sure if that was done by using the power wheel of backing off the spring adjuster.

I did a quick test yesterday evening trying both. I found that it was slightly better but only slightly from my Max point. I know shooting one target isn't enough to draw conclusions. I'll have to weigh some more pellets and wait for that calm morning and then shoot at least 4 targets at each setting.

Thanks for the link. I will go back and read rsterne's post. Sometimes you miss things. But Matt helped me and my Impact is really shooting great right now. I think my shot count could stand to come up a bit so I'll spend time experimenting with backing off the hammer force.
