Both .25 and .22 are great calibers and will work well in long range slug guns. The .22 caliber liners were released first so there are more of them out there. People have had more time and done a lot more testing with the .22 than with the .25 too. I'm sure there are other factors too but that's what came to mind for me since I just got my .25 liner a few weeks ago and have been shooting it as much as I can to get things figured out.
My .25 cal. slug liner shoots the 33.95 MkI pellets the same or better than the pellet liner that came in my FX Crown. I've been testing the .25 slugs slowly but surely, although the 33.95's shoot great, I want to take advantage of slugs that have a much higher B.C., after all, that's why I bought it!
I have so many slugs to test ranging from 25.4gr to 45gr, with different tips, bases, bearing surfaces, diameters, etc. that it's a slow going process. It's not like buying a tin of 33.95's and a tin of 25.4's and finding which one shoots better at what velocity in my gun! I've shot groups with each of the slugs I have and recorded the velocities, while looking for slugs who's accuracy stood out at those particular velocities. I then did it again with the top performing 6-7 slugs and tried those 6-7 slugs at both higher and lower velocities. I then narrowed it down again and looked for similarities in the slugs that would make them shoot well. The weight, base, tip, etc... I then try to narrow it down some more and do it again. Even the slugs that didn't initially test well I'm having to test again because they may be great at different, higher or lower velocities. I then have to go through the whole process again with those. It's so very slow because there are so many slugs to test, test again, and again, but I am making headway. I will post all of the velocity information for all of the slugs I've tested, as well as detailed information on the three or four slugs that I find to shoot the very best in my gun and at what velocities.
I'm going to keep at it over the next week or two. Hopefully I'll have some good results to share that will help cut down on the learning curve for those of you getting ready to shoot with your .25 cal. FX slug liner.
I want to give a big shout out to Dale at Varmint Knocker for helping me out with custom slugs... I've tested various Rat Sniper, various Nielsen, a couple AONCO, H&N and various Varmint Knockers. After lots of testing, Dale has made up a bunch of custom slugs at my request, with whatever bases, tips and weights that I want. Its been a huge help having whatever slugs I need made up for me quickly, so that I can see if I'm on the right track. Dale makes great slugs, he ships fast, his prices are great and he's a super nice guy to boot! Thank you Dale!
