My Crown GRS Ultra Compact!

That combo looks so good great job, mine is a bit different but on the same lines of being a crown compact custom 12" barrel......

Lov'n the Gun!
I would much rather have this than any Red wolf.

One word o casuting. At low power, slugs are going to ice pick right thru vermin and eventually one may very well make it to your neighbors. Slugs are for high power and long range. They do not open at low power well. which means pass throughs.

Knife

yes sir! Slugs are not intended for backyard use at all. The very rare occasional slug use would be for long range target work at safe locations and maybe rabbit hunt out on the plains later this summer when rabbit season starts.

My 34 yard target box has 5 inches of old clothing full of lead and then 1 inch thick duct seal putty and then 3/4 inch pine board behind that. Then behind my target box is my 5 feet tall granite retainer wall, my biggest worry is ricochet if I miss the box completely......fairly certain that won’t happen unless I double load by accident but those just fall the the ground mostly.

Decided to change my tune because with lower reg pressure it was a bit on the louder side, not loud but I can hear it. Upped my regulator back to 130 and with TP on low and HS on Min I was getting 545 FPS and TP on medium Hades shoots 650 FPS. Just as I was still messing around and zero in with hades a squirrel showed up in my yard when I went to change out my 34 yard target paper. The squirrel fever kicked in and I ran to get my crown with hades and waited for a safe shot.

I must admit this is the worse kill I had in a while. Because I was feeling confident with my tune with hades I decided to go for a vital shot to test if it will pass through, in my excitement I pulled the shot slightly low. What was worrisome was the hades passed right through from 25 yards. fortunately I got both lungs so it didn’t go far, second shot was also a bit low so missed the brain and into the neck, immobilized it but didn’t turn the light off like I wanted to. Feeling terrible I ran over with my PP700 with a red dot and finished it with a head shot from 10 yards, not my best kill but I wasn’t ready which is my excuse and I’m sticking with it. 😆

The crown compact has just tasted it’s first blood!

So back to changing the tune again and for now settled on crosman pellet shooting 575fps and hades shooting 550fps with the same zero, hopefully another squirrel shows up so I can test the tune......

The tune isn’t my original target but the gun definitely needs a different tune compared to crown MK1. I’m just happy that the shot string is very consistent even with cheap crosman pellets and it’s super quiet for my covert backyard operations.

Edit: dropped the reg down to 120 and Hs wheel setting 2 gives me 600FPS with crosman pellets and 575fps for hades, this should be a better tune for my back yard use.

Finally got some time to test the slugs in the 380mm barrel and in the wind, as expected the 380 barrel happiest pushing the slugs at 750-780fps.

I had high hopes and expectations because the .22 and .25 slugs are wind defying! However they are shot at MUCH higher speed with slugs weight up to 3 times as much. At first I was discouraged because the gusting wind was pushing the slugs right up to 2 centimeters, it was 3-10mph out but my expectation was unrealistically high. Then after dinner I sat down and ran the numbers and to my utter shock the wind drift at 10mph supposed to be.....2 centimeter.

Holy smokes, it is so dead on!!!! the wind drift calculation couldn’t be more accurate! Earlier today I swore to give up on FX 177 barrels because of my misconception of the slow twist rate Causing excessive wind drift but it certainly seem to be shooting exactly as it should!!!

guess I’ll be fine tuning the 12.5 and 15 grain NSA slugs at around 760fps in the 380mm barrel and the same tune should get me to around 900 FPS with the 500mm barrel I have. This is very interesting, really need to get out and try it at 100 yards one of these days!

This one has 3 touching and 4th is when the wind switched and then the mag was empty.

this one was the best group of the day because the wind had a bit of lull.

keep in mind that the front was resting on a 3/4 full shooting bag and the rear was on my hand so not the most steady of setups but wasn’t bad because it wasn’t far. over all extremely happy with how it’s shooting.

My ultra compact crown didn’t stay as ultra compact for too long, put on the 500mm .177 barrel on but not too bad still. Need to source another .177 380mm barrel soon.

BUT with longer barrel I get to shoot the slugs a big faster. Best group in the wind today was shot at 900fps. Light slugs still gets pushed in the wind at 34 yards though. Got 4 in a single hole and 2 got pushed my wind, very promising so need to shoot them farther soon!

Also put on a ST bottle clamp on the crown because I am not going to drill my beloved GRS stock.

I have to say though, there is something about the GRS stock that makes shooting prone extremely stable! Very noticeably more stable than my impact, Dreamline or even the crown with the FX stocks. Can’t quite put my finger on it but it’s very noticeable, even the heart beat shake seems less.

Nice shot on that young female , hopefully you are planning on eating them.

@killahog: sadly wife is strongly against it because these are suburban tree rats so god knows what they have been eating and on top of that some of them do eat rat poison with some neighbors reporting finding dead ones that aren’t result of my free lead buffet. Poisoning are not really effective on rats anyways so they really should ban them, given I live in California I’m surprised that they haven’t banned poisons even though they banned lead ammo for hunting with powder burners.
