Size Does Matter

Talk of a fun shoot at Ione next month so I am taking out the .22 & .25 Gen I Marauders for a warmup.
Today the .22.
I knew the .22 was partial to 5.52mm pellets (regardless of the brand or weight, BTW) but a simple test bore that out.
.25 yards on the bench using a 6-9” Harris Bipod with a elderly shooter using an equally elderly Hawke Endurance scope.
Group #1 = 15 shots JSB 5.51mm Diablos
Group #2 = 5 shots JSB 5.52mm Diablos
Group #3 = 5 shots JSB 5.52mm Diablos

I shot the 2nd group of five to show that the first was not a fluke...

Wow, I would have never suspected such a difference. I was looking to buy some more H & N Sport, Baracuda Match pellets and saw that they came in 5.51 and 5.52 head sizes. I reckon I'll be getting the 5.52. I'm going to use my calipers and see what the head size is of the ones I'm currently shooting - they are phenomenal.

I wonder why the difference, could it be the extra 0.01 of the 5.52 pellets fit the barrel's lands and grooves better, making for better accuracy?.
