sitemark photon XT

Apparently, you're having issues about spending big monies for a good night vision. Am I close?

I own, or have owned, 5 different night vision scopes. I can say without any reservation.... You get what you pay for!

The ATN X-Sight II is not much more than a glorified HD camera. It eats batteries, and in fact, without the correct external battery, it is a nightmare, no pun intended! On my 10 scale, it rates a 4. And it is REALLY heavy!

Image wise, the Photon XT isn't any better, and neither is the Viper. The only advantage the Viper has, it is an add-on, rather than a replacement. It is too heavy as well! Several of the lessor priced Armasights are sort of okay, but they're still early generations (1 or 1+).

You just do not get into anything quality (past Gen 2) if you don't lay out big bucks. For example, the Armasight Nemesis is about $1,500 and it is still Gen 2 quality. Passible, depending on how you're going to use it. But the truth is, you have to get into Gen 3 thermal scopes to get the image quality most serious night hunters are looking for. And Gen 3 scopes start at about $5,000, and range to $15,000 for top of the line.

If you're just a casual night shooter, and want 24/7 video capability, and don't mind the weight, buy the ATN 5x20 X-Sight II, its companion battery (not an after-market one!), leave it on 5X, and use the most expensive 64 GB chip you can buy (≈$100). You will be happy enough, at least until the extra weight gets you down, which it will in time.

I have owned 2 X Sights, a Photon XT, and now have a Pulsar N550A. I agree with Alan completely, as a matter of fact he was the one who originally suggested that I buy the Pulsar. The difference is huge. I wrote a post a short while ago with some of my findings. Here is a link if you want:

At that time I didn't have the Pulsar yet, but I can tell you now it is undeniably worth the extra cash, and you can pick up a used N550 for less than 700 bucks on EBay, and around 800 for the 550A. If your pockets have some depth, the N750 is around a grand and has a nicer display and a laser illuminator as opposed to the LED On the 550. Difference between the 550 and 550A is that the A version has a Wireless remote where standard is corded, it has 1.5 optical zoom that spans from 4.5 to 6.75 while the standard is fixed at 4.5, and there are 13 reticles as oppposed to 5 that can change colors instead of only black or white.
