Sightron 45x45 vs. Leupold 45X45 fixed power scope reticle questions

I’m looking at buying a fixed power 45X45 Benchrest scope for both/either RF and Air Gun shooting purposes. I need the higher magnification but both brands only offer crosshairs or target dot reticles.

Have several good Athlon and Sightron variable magnification scopes that have nice MOA hash mark reticles. I like the 20 oz weight of the fixed power scopes, but I’m concerned about using the target dot or crosshairs effectively without the hash marks to dial in on my holdovers and windage adjustments.

Would appreciate any Benchrest user experience or feedback from owners using these scopes. Also, would like some input as to how you use either reticle for your holds.

Thanks, Tom

I have a SIghtron 10-50 S3 with the fine cross hairs. Reticle works for me. They come in target dot as well and I suppose either would work ok. I generally shoot at 35X, but I like the ability to change that if I need too. While heavier than fixed power, I like this scope for BR shooting. I have another with the MOA0-2 reticle that I use for 100 yd air rifle BR shooting. The reticle is a bit thicker than the fine cross hair and easier to see on the target at that distance. That said, I think I would buy a target dot if you are trying to decide between the two.

Thanks Paul.

Can you describe how you use the duplex or crosshairs reticle for Benchrest at 100 yards? I’m used to hash marks and am curious to know how folks use a reticle without hash marks at these distances.

I zero the gun in at 100 yards. No holdover. BR is too precise to be guessing. If I'm holding over to compensate for wind, I usually aim for one of the outside rings on the target. It helps to try a couple of sighters to minimize guessing.

Tom,

Sorry my reply was confusing, now that I read it. I do not own a Leupold nor have I compared one side by side to my Sightron. I purchased the Sightron because they offered a blue label / military / first responder discount. I'm totally satisfied with its performance. The only negative is the smaller eye box / relief on the Sightron than I am used to on lower magnification scopes. It takes some practice to pick it up consistently but I'd imagine the Leupold might be similar in that aspect too?

No problem. I have also heard some slight concerns about the eye relief on the Leupold but both scopes do get stellar reviews. Thanks for clarifying.

I only have had Leupold Competition 35s and a 40x. The eye relief is not fussy on them at all. As a matter of fact, I chose the 40 initially for FT for the very reason that I could have my eye move a little and not completely lose the picture. Maybe some of their other models besides the competition are fussy....but the comps are not at all.

Id rather have a graduated reticle for 100y shooting. For 25m or 50 BR....there is no need for anything more than a duplex with a target dot since you can use the rings for holdoff spacing. A lot of times at 100 you are holding completely off the rings somewhere.

Very helpful Mike and thanks to other responders too!!

I will primarily be using the scope for 100 yard BR, and only occasional 50 yard BR. Given that and your answer, I think I might be more comfortable with a Sightron variable power 10X50X60 MM Slll MOA target dot scope. I'm sure either the Leupold or Sightron 45X fixed power competition scope would also be fine, but I do like the idea of varying the magnification at 75 and 100 yards. Have not decided yet, but all of this information is helpful.

I have a Sightron Slll Mil dot on my Red Wolf now, and love the scope.

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

Sorry I cannot comment on the fixed scopes, but I wanted to remind you of a post I made a while back on deals for Sightrons. I know he sold out of the 25177, but he never said anything about selling out of the others.

People usually sell these used at higher prices, so you definitely want to buy from Scott, or get your favorite Sightron dealer to match him. You do have to call Scott, as I don’t think he has these on the site (at least he didn’t). Several guys here have bought from him per this thread and the thread I put up earlier in the year.

Helping out how I can.
