Shroud or moderator directly on barrel

Hi, I have an fx impact, with both a .25 700mm barrel, and a 500mm .22 barrel. The .25 has the stock fixed shroud, which I use a hogan decimeter moderator on. I am gonna switch over to the .22 barrel. which have the stock retractable shroud. The .25 shroud with moderator will be to long for the .22 barrel. The hogan moderater attached to the barrel only, seems to be a litle quiteter than the retractable shroud, so I am about to decide what I am gonna use, before I start tuning the gun. Is there any downsides to attaching the moderator directly to the barrel in comparison to use the retractable shroud? Would the shroud in theory strip more air away from the pellet, or doeas it not matter? My personal opinion is, it probably doeas not matter, as long as I stick to what you tune the gun for. Any advice.

A shroud that is the same length past the muzzle as a mod will out perform the mod due to the extra volume, The problem with making an extremely good sound suppressor is you hear more of the action noise. I replaced the two piece shroud/ mod assembly on my impact for a custom carbon shroud. The noise dropped from 98dB down to 72dB but the action noise is driving me nuts!

I shoot my Impact with no shroud. I attach a DonnyFL directly to the liner retainer that the shroud usually attaches to in stock configuration. It is 1/2-20 UNF Male threaded so any popular moderator will screw right on.

That is what I do then. I tried it just outside a few minutes ago, and it seems to work well.

Thx all for the input.

I agree with that. I can't hear the best , but had to take a mod off my Vulcan as the noise in my ear from action was far worse than the little noise I heard from the muzzle. Plus those mods make this guns to darn long, IMO only.

i am glad I am not the only one, I also have some hearing loss, the muzzle report is far less offensive to me than the action noise. People often remark on how quiet the fx impact is, bearing in mind mine is a sub12fpe version, so should be very quiet, to my ears it is a cannon. By contrast, my Theoben rapids are much quieter.
