Shout Out to Joe Wayne Rhae (Oiled my Matador stock)

I saw where JWR really got grain to pop and a nice satin finish to boot. This was smoothed to 1000 grit then 2000 grit for 2 additional coats of oil.

Well, there’s a variety of oils to use, depending on the wood hardness, and how glossy you like it. True oil seems to be the most mentioned oil on this forum... I use this mixture:

50% raw linolje (in Norwegian that is)

25% Benar (Often used on wooden boats)

25 % American Terpentine

(A bit more terpentine to begin with, so the oil goes deeper in the wood).

Do not apply the oil before the sanding is finished of course, and use gloves from the beginning, or stains from your fingers may go into the wood.

Sanding: depending on the surface, but starting with 240 would be all right. From there you go all the way to at least 1500 grit.

I recommend 240 - 400 - 600 or 800 -1500. Now you soak the stock lightly with water, use a wet cloth. When dry, start from 400 and up to 1500 again. Repeat that procedure once again, and the wood will not rise any more.

Now you are ready for the oiling process.

Use the thinnest oil first. Use 000 steel woll and work the oil into the wood. This you do in several turns. Let the wood dry a bit between the layers. Depending on the wood, this can take some days. Myself, I do this nearly a week. Then you just let the oil dry a couple of days, and apply THIN layers of oil (now the mixture can be thicker), but you do not use the steel wool, just an old T-skirt or something to wipe off before set to dry.

And of course, gloves through the whole process.

I would recommend 7-12 thin layers and at least 4 hours between the layers, or a day for that matter.

The oil will harden. Depending on what oil you use, it will take some time. The above mentioned mixture will take at least 4 days before I would touch it with my bare hands.

Edit: ha..... and there I see Joe came with the fasit before I posted this. A lot more educational than my horrible english. 😄😄
