Should we be shooting crows...

Ok...let's overlook the fact that these guys are the unpaid garbage collectors that keep dead things off our streets and yards. Read the following article, and ask yourself "Is a crow more intelligent than I am?" https://currently.att.yahoo.com/finance/news/crows-self-aware-know-know-131700253.html I knew they were clever, and have read they sometimes bring "presents" (pebbles, twigs) to people who befriend them, But I didn't know they "...ritualistically mourn their dead"

Cripes...we may have members out there shooting their intellectual cousins!!!

Kindly 'Ol Uncle Hoot

PS: You "re-incarnation" believers especially need to give this some serious thought!

Like most animals in the world they can be pests, pets or dinner.

If they are pests destroying stuff or your peace of mind then shoot them if it is legal where you are.

If they are not a pest then leave them alone they have a right to live.

If they are pets then enjoy the company and take care of them.

Probly not so good to eat so we will leave that alone.

This is how I sort all of this out and it werqs for me and my conscience.

I live a mile or so from the Mississippi River south of st.louis, mo and the west Nile disease has taken it’s toll on the crows in the area. I now have a group of six their numbers for the past three to five years were down to two. I think that their numbers need increase vastly before I start hunting them again. And they been proven to be the most intelligent of all birds and many mammals.

I grew up crow hunting in NC. We had a group of 4 that hunted together, and all of us were good callers, so we had some tremendous shotgun shooting as they dove through the trees. Then, in 1972, some of the geniuses in DC decided to add crows and a few other birds to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, some of which were not even migratory. Since then, the crow season is closed March-May, based on nesting. And hunting days are Wed, Friday and Saturday. So, that screwed up the best hunting time. The purpose of the MBTA was commendable, as market hunters were decimating the waterfowl. But, as bureaucrats often do, they got carried away with "protection". And yes, crows are very smart. Often when calling them, one single crow would come in first to check things out. We shot it if it was a dead certain shot, otherwise, we let it go, and then others would come in. If you shot and missed that scout, that was the end of that bunch, forget about it. And if we got shooting at one spot, we would immediately pack up and drive at least a mile down the road, because any crows in the area of the stand where we shot, were burned, you could call until blue in the face, they would answer, but not fly in.

I read a study where observers would find crows feeding in a field, with a wood lot close. They would send one person across the field and into the woods, Five minutes later he would come out, and the crows would return. Next, two would walk in, but only one come out, and the crows would not return. They repeated that, adding a person each time, until they concluded that the crows would count up to 4. They are also viscous, raiding the nests of other birds and killing the young and eating eggs.

Very interesting article in the link you provided. I've learned from experience that these intelligent corvids recognize faces and remember them for years.

They can also tell their buddy about you, too.

I don't shoot them anymore. I used to as a kid and they got in my sweetcorn. No need for it today in my situation. I understand they can do a lot of damage if you have sheep, so I'd take them out if that were the case.

Crows are jerks. Very intelligent yes but complete A-holes. If they are not bothering you leave them be. If they are using their intelligence to eat your garden before it even gets past sprouts then.......

hang them high!

They’re my favorite bird hands down. I completely agree that they’re smarter them most of our lawyers here in America. I once out of the blue decided to take practice LSATs and MCAT for fun... the MCAT I couldn’t answer anything almost, pretty sure I’d have got a 100 percent on the LSAT without studying at all. In fact I think I’d have scored 100 on it in 5th grade

Crows supposedly can recognize people. There was a study we’re they had a mean group that threw rocks at the birds and a nice group that didn’t. The birds would fly away when a member of the mean group would walk outside regardless of how they dressed. They tried confusing the birds by having the groups swap clothes and the birds still remembered the person. That’s clearly more intelligent then over half our lawyers.

I have respect for any animal that I’d hunt. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do it, just means I’d be respectful. That’s why I can’t watch those retards hunting coyotes on TV where they’ll take 50 shots with their little boys bang bang gun and hit the animal once in the gut and they all high five and laugh until it dies. Morons imo. I’m surprised liberals haven’t had more success getting regulations laid down on hunting and guns given the state of “predator” “hunters”. Oregon doesn’t have rabbits like they used to because the same type of people would shoot everyone they saw for so long. Rant over for now... I shouldn’t be allowed to post until I’ve been up for at least an hour...

More intelligent they are more of a pest/destructive they will be.....kinda like people. I say shoot them on sight.

The good thing of them being smart is if you shoot one others won’t come back so mission accomplished. I wounded one once and they haven’t come back to my tree since so it’s great. I don’t really like to kill for the sake of killing but they will decimate your garden if not kept in check.

They EAT my baby quail whole and harrass my Great Horned Owls. They also damage my pecan crop. DEAD Crow if they don't respect the range of my guns which they learn quickly. Once the range of the gun is determined they stay just beyond.

They are far more efficient mouse hunters than raptors. The raptor grabs at the mouse with a claw and sometimes comes up with a dirt clod instead of mouse.

The crow lands and pecks up the mouse swallowing it whole and never misses.

Side note: The Crow / Raven was the first animal that began to repopulate the earth after the flood! I suspect that since it was first to leave the boat it thinks it owns everything. lol
