Tuning Should I use a new FX Superior Liner?

Situation:

I have a Gen 1 Impact in 25 cal. Upgraded with the original smooth twist to an early Smooth Twist X Barrel and just added a Power Plenum. It's been in pieces for the last 6 or 8 months, finally got it back together couple weeks ago so it's holding air, It's a complete rebuild, so I'll have to tune all over again. I figure if I'm spending time tuning now, I'll start with the right barrel liner.

Goal:

Shoot 25 caliber JSB 33.95 heavy's accurately at distance (100 yards)

Will the Superior Liner or Superior Heavy Liner giver better accuracy than the original Smooth Twist X liner I currently have? If so, which superior liner is right for the 33.95's?

Thoughts or opinions?

I have the same gun also in .25 I put the superior liner in it this week and am VERY pleased so far. I went to the range Weds afternoon all I had with me were NSA 29 and 29.5 slugs. WOW at 100yards 940fps had had several MOA groups! I installed the carbon fiber tube last night pretty jacked to see how it does with the 34gn MKI and II's today.

Please keep me posted on the 34 grain pellet performance. Is it the Superior or Superior Heavy liner?

Many thanks for the feedback!

Saltlake58,

Check and make sure you have power to shoot them fast enough. In my experience, going from a 600mm regular STX liner to a 600mm Superior liner lowers the muzzle velocity about 10 to 20fps(depending on the ammo). Superior liners usually tighten up group sizes, but only up to the distance that you have the speed to keep the groups tight.

I'm getting good results shooting the regular Superior shooting King Heavy MK2 at 910 fps out of a Crown MK2 with a 600mm Superior liner:

(6 to 10 mph wind from the left)

Slower speeds(top group at ~870 fps, top group at ~890 fps) were still good at 75 yards(not shown), but opened up quite a bit at 100 yards:

(0 to 2 mph wind)

Good luck

Good points. Goal for speed is 830 to 850 ish. Speed is the reason I added the Power Plenum. I was over-driving the gun to get the speed, didn't like running it at 145 bar on the old regulator. The power plenum should give me the power needed at lower reg pressures (I hope). Good to know the Superior liner uses a bit more energy to get the pellet out the front!

@Saltlake58. Today I was shooting the MKII's at 100 yards avg 902 fps had several sub MOA's then I set up marbles. These are the solid color ones like for board games. The trick is not to hit the golf tee I put them on. What was cool is due to the trajectory when I hit just the marble it would drive the tee into the ground further. LOL great fun oh its not the heavy liner

Qball - agree. Doing research on the side. Since my goal is to shoot the 34 grain heavies only, I reviewed the video posted by B7B that Ted did some time ago. For now, I think I'll just keep the STX liner I already have. It shot the heavies better than the Superior in his tests (one data point only, but a good one), and can always upgrade later if I want to switch to slugs.

It's an older gun (I can't believe I'm calling a 4 year old gun "Older"), so I just want to operate well within the guns parameters.

I just purchased a new Impact in .22, and it has the superior liner. I'll experiment with that liner if I want to shoot slugs.

Gotta love airguns these days! So many choices, so many ways to setup a gun. I think the setting up is half the fun!

good choice! The .25 STX is already very good if you get a good one, STX manufacturing process aren’t as good/consistent as superior liner but if you get a good one it’s really good with pellets. The .25 slug liner A was freakishly good with heavy and hades, I was stupid to sell it to chase lighter slugs, I can’t find one anymore.

interestingly I found the superior heavy really quite good with JSB hades and heavy(same design) at around. 800FPS speed. My theory is slower the speed slower the effective twist rate and actual projectile revolution. But if you only shoot the JSB heavy there there is no point “upgrading”.
