Should I expect better accuracy with a Gamo Hunter 440 ? (2nd. Update 11/30/20)

You should be able to get at least an inch or better using preferred quality pellets like JSB 10.34gr or Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum 10.5gr. or H&N Baracuda 10.6gr. at 25 yards.

Try tightening up all stock mounting screws first. 2 on both sides of the fore end and probably 2 underneath at and/or the trigger guard area.

Use proper artillery hold for spring guns.

If not then it's probably your scope mounts loose or scope broken or creeping without a spring gun scope stop pin.

I would expect that from a rest at 25 yards you should be in the 1/1.5" group range. I am sure that you have checked all of the obvious things like scope & rings. My wife & I are both over 80 and can group 2.0/3.0" at 25 yards from a Caldwell bag using my HW95L & Hawke scope. Try holding the rifle as lightly as possible and use the same check weld each time. Also you may want to let someone else shoot it and compare results. Good luck.

An HW95/Beeman R9 should easily do 3/8"- 1/2" or better even 1/4" at 25 yards with its preferred pellet...

Could be the way you're holding it. Try experimenting with that?

Thank you folks......I guess air rifles are a bit different than conventional.....

That's a good video Odoyle, thanks......

They are a very different animal from conventional firearms, and springers are doubly so, some will shoot great out of the box and are not fussy about hold or ammo, most are pellet fussy, but if you have patients and work at it your gun should be reasonably accurate in the under 50 yd. range, but even the high quality/high end guns (like automobiles) can turn out a lemon once in a while.

Check all your stock screws, remount your scope, try cleaning your barrel, make sure all the friction joints are lubed, and buy a variety of different brand, type, and weight pellets and experiment to see which ones it likes the best, actually getting to know your gun can be fun if you don't think of it as work or wasted time.

Son-of-a-gun.......It looks like this gun only likes wad cutters.

As I was thinking about it today, when I got this gun, maybe 3 years ago, all I had were wad cutters. I was always just a pistol bulls-eye shooter.

Well, I would set up little wood blocks down here at my cabin, and send them flying from the porch. It only had those florescent aided iron sights. I was always impressed by it's accuracy as I would always send those blocks flying. Well, I remember buying, at the time, some 'fancy' pellets. Pointed jobs, hollow point, red polymer tipped, etc......I didn't pay that much attention, but those little wood blocks didn't go flying as often back then. I thought it was me. I put the scope on the gun last year, the one that came with it. I was getting groups like I spoke of at the beginning of this thread. I would adjust the scope, no better. More adjusting, nothing. I threw the scope away, thinking it was poop. I bought a new scope and tried again last week. Same lousy groups.

Well, I bought a box of wad cutter pellets for the heck of it (needed them anyway as I started pistol in the basement again. My FAS 604 getting rehabbed, but I'm shooting my dads FWB Model 2). I set up on the porch down here yesterday with the rifle. Holy smokes, 1 1/2 inch groups. I fired about 50 rounds to sight in nicely. I switched over to pointed pellets, they flew everywhere, a mess.....Red-tipped, same thing.....I tried again this morning, to be sure I'm not crazy. Same deal.....

Well, I'm happy to know I'm not nuts !

Thank you to all that responded to this. I'm happy to be a member here......

Maybe others have, but I never had much luck with pointed pellets for accuracy. If you are getting good results with match pellets, you should get even better results with domed pellets at distances over about 20 yards in my experience. The JSB 8.44 grain pellets have produced good accuracy in every rifle I've tried them in, so I would definitely give them a try.

My first post and hello every one!

I joined a few day back, I was a yellow forum member 1keloso1. l had a gamo 440 a few years back and it shot 1/4 inch (one ragged hole) at 14 yards with RS 7.3 grain pellet. That's yardage I have in my back yard. I could make long range shots with this particular rifle out to 70 yards on crows. 440 and RS pellet combination worked great . That rifle was one great find n pawn shop, sold it and regretted, did buy another but l could not get it to perform like the first one.l have owened 5 R9's and that old 440 kept up with them. Only real challenge was the triggger but it only made it that much sweeter when l seen the results on paper.I did test with lots of different pellets till l found the one it liked.
