Short range scope??

I love my UTG Bug Buster scopes. Lightweight, compact and focus down to 3 yards. (Yes, 3 yards) They are also relatively inexpensive for what you get. I have a 4x32; 6x32; and several 3-9x32. I’m looking at picking up their latest version, a 4-12x32. Mostly on Disco’s, etc.
They are great for short range pest control, including wasps and weeding when you are bored. Lol

The OP did not list what his target is going to be. A 3x scope will not be much slower than a red dot to get on target, and an adjustable power level will allow him to extend the range at a later date. I am projecting my own bias on the rather open ended first post.

My experience with red dots has been less than joyous. A 40mm 3x9 scope with AO will allow plenty of room to expand out to 50 plus yards on a rabbit sized target. The intended target of the original post has not been revealed. If all he wants to do is tap a 2 inch spinner at 20 yards, a red dot scope will work fine for him. Have you ever met a newbie air gunner who was satisfied with their open sights which a red dot is a slight improvement on, but nothing revolutionary? Maybe so, however, the red dot is a short dead end street that I presume will not leave the OP an avenue to progress in his shooting. The OP neglected to tell us what gun he is putting the optic equipment onto. It may be a moot point if he intends to play air soft, rather than persue technical air gunning.

Hi Davemac,

I would like to throw my two cents in here if I may...I recently purchased a Bushnell 4x Prism Scope for my .25 Wildcat. Here is a link for you to check it out:

This optic is crystal clear - the reticle is black all the time unless you change it to green or red, and when you do it is absolutely brilliant to see.

A couple years ago I bought a Holosun red dot sight for my Wildcat and it was great at close range, but I kept wishing it had a little magnification. So I bought the Bushnell Prism Sight to try out and absolutely love it! I dedicated my old red dot to my Hatsan ATP1 pistol. With the 4x magnification I can be as precise at 25-30 yards as I can with my big scope, and at 50 yards I can do 1" groups with it. It weighs a half a pound less than my big scope, but actually feels like nothing at all because it sits all the way back on my picatinny rail. The feeling of my rifle with it is sweeeeet! :)

A couple weeks ago at the range I was hitting little paper cone drinking cups on the hill behind the 100 yard line at 121 yards from the bench. Last Sunday one of the range officers challenged me to try and hit one of the paper cups out there on the hill standing offhand...I actually hit one five times in a row and missed the last three shots but not by much! It is so easy to use...much easier than looking through my big scope! I leave it on my rifle all the time now, and my Athlon Midas 2.5-15x50 rides along in the side pouch of my gun case. I promise you this one's a keeper!

All the best, Chuck

The problem with a scope at 20yds or less is that the center scope to center barrel distance really throws you off. A red dot sits much closer to the barrel so you can stay on target. I used to have a scope on my P-rod but find that at close range (what I use it for) POI vs POA is just too far apart as you change form say 5yds to 20yards. Now with a red dot my POA and POI pretty much stays the same at 5yrds and 20yrds. It is only when I'm down to under 3yrds is where POI and POA changes even then it is only about half an inch at about 3feet away. I use my P-rod to shoot rats/mice/rattle snakes usually from 3feet to about 10meters, not very often do I need to go beyond 10meters

red dot I'm using is bushnell TRS, it has one of the lowest dot to mount height, not much higher then open sights

Hey Jimbo you're right but I'll tell you this, I absolutely love mine. Unlike a red dot sight this has 4 power magnification, and unlike a red dot the prism sight has a retical showing in black at all times. Then if you like you can change it to red or green.

The reticle in this prism sight is superior to a dot because it has hash marks on there for holdovers and the dot does not. I'm willing to bet you would really love one if you tried one.:)

Well sonny it is a mil based reticle with 10 mil total holdover... This 4x Prism Scope was designed for the new Savage MSR rifle - I am told that guys shoot out to 600 yards with this scope on silohouette targets.

With this mounted on my .25 Wildcat I can easily hit little cone paper cups at 120 yards. That is holdover #7 hashmark on the reticle for my rifle at 120 yards, which amounts to about a 25" drop. I will also tell you that I absolutely love mine because I am an old guy that grew up shooting open sights, and this is as close to open sights as I can put on my Wildcat...and that I also love shooting standing offhand and with this sight it is so much easier for me than using my Athlon Midas scope. It only weighs around 16 ounces but because I have mine mounted all the way to the rear of my picatinny rail it feels like I have nothing on my rifle at all.

For me shooting from the bench is fun and the only way to get a rifle dialed in and running perfectly. But after that I feel like I need to pick it up and shoot it offhand accurately, because you don't get to drag along a shooting bench when you walking through the woods hunting. In many hunting scenarios we only have a moment to shoulder the rifle and fire, and this type of scope is ideal for that.

The bottom line? I am just having one hell of a lot of fun with mine! :)

You are most welcome Sonny.
You have heard the old saying that "less is more"? Well I am using less magnification these days just for fun and I am loving it. Last Sunday at the range I set my Midas 2.5-15x50 down to 5x and was shooting at 100 yards...then I set it to 8x which is where I left it for the day. I was actually hitting empty cartridge boxes at 120 yards on the hill behind the 100 yard line on 8x from the bench...and then for about an hour I practiced doing it standing offhand. It seems that with less magnification I can hold the reticle steadier and am much more accurate than if I have it cranked up to 15x! So for me I am at the place in my shooting hobby where less magnification is truly more fun! :) I know you will love your Bushnell Accelerate Prism Sight.
