Shooting slugs with a budget rifle is it possible??

Hey guys

im really looking into getting a rifle I can shoot slugs with for hunting but really cant pony up the coin for a high end powerhouse gun at the moment

is there anything I can get into the game with around $500 or less ??

Best ive found so far is the airforce talon p but haven't found a used one that isn't already sold lol

I will use the gun for small game hunting jacks cottontails and ground squirrels mostly out to 80 yds

any other options out there that will be light enough to carry for a day afield ??

Would prefer .25 but .22 would be fine too as long as it shoots slugs accurately

thanks for any info I'm a complete noob to slug shooting so I'm completely clueless lol

I've seen videos of people shooting slugs in a Marauder. How well, I don't know. The advantage would be that like Bob_O said, you need to push the slug fast enough to stabilize properly. That takes energy. The Marauder is adjustable enough to handle the job. If you bought the .22, you could adjust it to produce power like a .25 or anything in between.

Slugs are kinda new, but if you know someone with a Marauder that wanted to experiment, you might get your questions answered. I'm tuning my Marauder to go the other direction, reducing energy, so can't help though it sounds like an interesting experiment . . . . .

The 22 cal SPA M-10 is a excellent choice for a gun that costs 250-300 dollars

and shoots a slug very good I've owned 2 of them sold one and my

brother has the other one . It can shoot a 33 grain slug at 935 and hit a

ping pong ball at 200 yards " well at least mine did " if you want to know more send me a PM .

You can find them on eBay . I've been thinking of getting another one myself .

34.95 JSB from older .253” Sumatra at 950 FPS on power setting 6 out of 13. 50 grain sized slugs from 1:18 twist barrel put 5 in 1/4” @ 40 yards or better. Target is run off streams puddle at 190 yards. That red shed is 340 yards away but I don’t shoot slugs towards that area.

Sumatra .25

New barrels are .251 no choke. Shoot JSB 25.43, 34.95, 50 grain slugs all no problem.

Let me clarify since both of my negatives are from the same nit picking guy who doesn’t understand what I’m saying.

My Sumatra is older .253” lands. New ones are .251” lands. It doesn’t matter that JSB are .250 heads, on power setting 6 that skirt is oblulated & puts all 3 in 1/4” 5 shot groups at 40 yards or better. Pellets on power setting 4-6-8 respectively. No need to go to 13 unless shooting 60-70 grainers.

You don’t need an FX Impact you need power for slugs & correct twist rate. Proper size helps of course. My slugs are .253” 50 grains.

I never said trust FX, I said they do in-house testing with unknown large combinations of ammo/twists/weights/designs. I said what shows up on paper isn’t always what the sub sonic calculator spits out. I never said it’s “magic.”

I paid $250 shipped for my Sumatra & I’ll NEVER sell it. I’m having problems downloading slow motion video so PM me for videos to texts.

I just picked up a TalonP used, I put up a WTB listing and within a hour I had several offers before settling on the one I picked up.

i went through that "damn to late it's already sold" thing so I feel you. Given the ability to change barrels very easily, you can simply pick up a .22 barrel and have both .22 & .25 options and power to push whatever lead you choose.

Seneca Sumatra they have refurbished ones at pyramid air for about the money you’re talking about. I have only had mine for two weeks and it’s crazy powerful and as accurate as my Seneca Aspen was

.22 caliber, 28.5 grains, 3000 psi
1,113 fps
1,100 fps
1,093 fps
1,075 fps
1,069 fps
1,067 fps

my scope broke so I had to send it back it should be here next week 😃

Thanks for all the good info guys

reason I'm wanting to shoot slugs is mostly because I sometimes like to try those long range hell Mary shots when I'm out in the field hunting or messing around and as mentioned already I'm a bit of a tinkerer myself so I figure why not see what the slug game has to offer in longer range accuracy only one way to find out right ??

Plus if I can find a good accurate shooting rig for under or at $500 budget I figure I'm doing pretty good

guess we will see if I can get anywhere near to it lol
