Seem like the newest scam

I posted a WTB in the classifieds about a week ago. Since I posted it I have had two people who joined AGN after I posted the ad send me PMs with messages that a person has one for sale and provide an email. As stated both of these messages are from people who joined AGN after the date of the ad and neither has any posts. I'm not out-right calling them scammers but their actions are certainly suspicious.

Yea those are 100% scams. Same thing happened to me after two WTB ads. After I replied to the first one, two seconds later they reply to my second WTB ad.

Apparently his friend Jude just so happens to have every item that I ever wanted. Must be my lucky day!

I've had 2 persons contact me regarding my classified ad: WTB Seneca 2500 for Parts

They did not PM but, used the e-mail address in the ad.

Based on follow up emails with both, they are indeed scammers.

Here are the e-mail addresses the used

I hope this helps others avoid being ripped off

PS

Thank you Michael for your pro-active & multi-faceted approach to scammers.

Especially for the excellent info found in these 2 pinned threads you have created

This started happening back in March to me. You place a WTB listing and they send you their friends email.

I replied to a couple of them, and if they answer, it's always the same, cut and paste type message, with a email address.

Just like you did, check their profile, join date day of , and no topics started or replies to post.

I just stopped messing with them at that point.

This one is from back in March-

Maybe if there was a threshold whereas, members with fewer than a certain number of “meaningful“ posts, accuracy bullseyes, or their join date could not access the classifieds until they have been a “proven contributor”. I don’t see where new members really need access to the classifieds anyway. If we’re leery of them, why give them the privilege to access the classifieds link?
scammers for the most part, are not going to hang around and be part of the community. They are looking for quick and easy targets and probably have very little interest or knowledge about our sport.

I see “membership” as a privilege and you should contribute something in order to gain total access.
Granted, this would not eliminate all scammers but would greatly scale back the number that slip through the cracks.

just my 2 pennies...

I reported to Michael that the same thing happened to me. Honestly at this point I believe putting a wtb add out is going to result in 100 percent chance to attract one of these A-holes. It's happened to me every time I put one out. Super lame. I won't buy from anyone without tons of feedback. Which is sad. I wish we can trust new members so they can sell thier guns just like the rest of us. I've started to only buy standard PayPal and pay the extra fee as well. I wish they can fix this scam soon. I just don't know how they could do it. Maybe by not letting new accounts use pm until a week or two goes by or something like that 😐

If we have to have 10 posts to post an ad in the classified why can’t we set the forum up where it is required to have 10 posts before your PM function works? That way they can’t just join up and start contacting anyone. Not sure if that can be done it was just a thought.

it wouldn’t stop all the scams or someone from contacting the ones who post their emails and such in their ads but I think the majority of us use the PM function.

Agreed!

IMO an excellent good idea,
